Was Ludwig van Beethoven Black?

June 25, 2007

Maybe. To European standards he was not, but to American standards maybe. One things is for sure: though Beethoven surely had a dark complexion, he didn’t have a black or brown skin, nor negroid features. On the contarary. His protraits shows a typical European face and so does a portraits of one his brothers and two portraits of his nephew Karl. His ancestors were partly Flemish (the Beethovens), partly German (the Keverichs). At first sight there is not the slightest trace of a proof for his “blackness”. We cannot exlude beyond any doubt that he had some drops “black’ blood in his veins. During the so-called 80 years war (1568-1648) Flanders and the southern part of the Netherlands were occpied by the spanish and a part of the Spanish army was ” Moorish”, as they called it in those days, which means from Northern Africa. So it’s not completely immpossible that one of those soldiers had been the cause of some African genes in the Beethoven family. What specifically is being referenced, is the true identity of Ludwig van Beethoven, considered Europe’s greatest classical music composer. Directly, Beethoven was a black man. Specifically, his mother was a Moor, that group of Muslim Africans who conquered parts of Europe–making Spain their capital–for some 800 years.

WTF? I don’t believe this because it’s a theoretically thing. I am not surprised if I hear the story about I. King Jordan and Jane K. Fernandes that they were black.

I suggest you to research and read with your open mind. Did you know there was 5 Black U.S. Presidents? Beethoven’s background came from Africa and if you research on his grandparents’ backgrounds, you will know more.

Nope, they all are whites, not black. Their relatives may be black but not themselves. It’s in their blood that may consider them as a black but by the cover, I judge them as whites.

Don’t be closed minded. Remeber, they potray Hannibal and Jesus as being white too.

  9. July 8, 2007 at 5:55 pm

Don’t be closed minded. Remeber, they portray Hannibal and Jesus as being white too. We know the original Jews are from Ethiopia but the truth is still hidden. Beethoven’s mother was a Moor.

I would say, that it is possible that his belgium family has some moorish heritage. So, if you take the one-drop-rule, he was black. But the one-drop-rule is inaccurate and promotes racism.
Besides, music is for the ears and the brain, not for the eyes.

Do a google image search and you will see hundreds of potraits of rather white looking Beethovens- pointed noses, straight hair, blue eyes and all. Makes you wonder what else in history books has been “whitened” over time by writers.

why does it matter any way i just watched this cool show on the history channel about a month or two ago that claimed that we all may originate from Africa anyway.. i’m sure you’ve heard that theory before..so get over your self… like “African” guy/girl said we are all human and we have all contributed to the human civilization, and you cannot argue that white boy! and what?

Bullshit! This information was erroneous. That was from the idealism of racism that is influenced under our US black president Obama’s political agenda. Racism is his favorite political tool. Obama administration and his racism-minded backers use the racism influences and distort the history by painting colored skins on famous people, especially for Europeans, and portraying black heroes while vilifies white people as villains. Black racists love to subjugate white skinned people in order to teach us a lesson for the black slavery suffering. Racism is truly an ugly toxic issue nowadays.

WHY DO PEOPLE CARE IF HE WAS BLACK??? Answer because someone cared enough to make him not. Its easy this day and age to say WE ARE ALL HUMANS, FROM AFRICA (maybe) However as it stands, the constant proof that some white groups have taken the steps to distort the truth about little things like beethoven’s looks, about who jesus was, about who invented what and who “discovered” America and etc. Gives reason to the Question Why Care? Care because someone felt the need to hide it. If you dont take the time to research then your opinion on the truth is not fact but you are more than well come to your opinion on what the real is.

I don’t think this hanthing to do with obama or a black writter writing this. Just becuase it say someone was black u can just say it was by a black writter. Letting that be sed I trully don’t care if he was black or white. We all came from africa so that means everyone some black in them.

Beethoven’s contemporaries described him as having “thick, bristly coal-black hair,” a “flat, thick nose,” large mouth, and “swarthy” complexion and as having “even more of the Moor in his features than his master Haydn”

So many white people imagine Jesus Christ as white!

Whether or not Beethoven was of black ancestry is of little importance! No matter what the composition of his gene pool, he was brought up and cultured in an entirely white environment, hence his musical development has much more to do with his white environment than whether his ancestry contained a miniscule portion of black genes. Even if his ancestry was entirely African, being brought up in Europe would have made him very different from the natives of Africa. Clearly this has not been the case, so what’s the problem?

There is a great deal written of Beethoven an I don’t think it ever mentions that he is black or african. Why rely upon cherry picked subjective 19th century portraits when there are voluminous writings about the man. I heard someone say that because his music was more rhythmic than other composers that he was black. I think that is racist. Why do people have to stir up these controversies? I think it derives from insecurity.

Why does it matter? i cannot beleive this is even a question. when your are trying to cotrol a particular race or people any and everthing has to be either hidden or taylored to present the information a certain way so that the people you are trying to oppress dont rise up against you. This is a tactic of war this has to go on because of the system that was and still is in place. if you actually beleive that the powers to be want to actually tell the truth about history why do they teach all american children that christopher columbus discovered america? we as adults know for a fact that this was not true. i have an idea, go to your state representative and ask to put the full truth about who was here thousands of years before columbus and i can garauntee that you will be labled as a radical.
