You know who I hate: Deaf People

November 16, 2007

Written by Bug

This guy hates Deaf people.

He got a gun! Who’s this guy behind his sheep mask? Does he want to kill us just because we are Deaf? In his blog, he wrote ” You know who I hate: Deaf People”. Nice name of topic, isn’t it? NOT! His message and the commenters’ messages can be found at http://www.killoggs.com/log/post/2597923 (see his message below in case he removes).

This person who wrote it, is an audist. He thinks we have no language and no life. I find this funny because most of us live in bilingual/bicultural society. We learned English and American Sign Language (or other sign language such as British, Japanese, Russian, etc.) because we can be allowed to evolve and develop naturally as we interacts with peers, Deaf/Hearing people, and the world.

I realize that many in the Deaf Culture and Community have had extremely negative experiences with audists like this guy with his sheep mask and that they who do not respect the heritage and language of the Deaf Culture. Why is that?

Audism is a term used to describe discrimination or stereotypes against deaf or hard of hearing people, for example by assuming that the cultural ways of hearing people are preferable or superior to those of deaf or signing culture, or that deaf people are somehow less capable than hearing people.

Here’s an example what Brandon ( http://www.killoggs.com )wrote:

You know who I hate: Deaf People

Deaf People piss me off. I mean, they’re basically retarded. And they act like you owe them something because their parent’s genes sucked, or mommy beat ’em too hard, or the lead paint had just too much lead, or because daddy couldn’t stop stabbing their eardrums.

I’d rather talk with a can of beans freshly rolled across the rio grande than a deaf person. Learn English, you deaf motherfuckers.

Another thing that pisses me off: Deaf Culture. Your culture is based on a lack.

Some people might say that I’m being short-sighted, especially as someone who suffers from hearing loss. But when worst comes to worst, I’ll just talk inappropriately loud… In English. Not some deaf person yelling-honking noise.

In a perfect world, all infants would be administered a deaf-test. And then have their brains dashed out if they repeatedly failed it. That’s how you handle deaf people. Coddling is not the answer – braining is.

Just for the record. The post was made months ago. It was a joke. The pictures are from flickr and are unrelated to the post. Last time I heard, in the U.S., it’s still legal to own a gun.

I love deaf people. Really. I am a deaf person myself, having lost my hearing in my late-twenties. Unfortunately, some people took it upon themselves to read without comprehension and began shooting off at the keyboard.

As for my own ugliness. I’ll admit, I’m no prize. Perhaps you should – along with practicing a little more critical reading – take a look in the mirror sometimes.

I’m no threat to anyone. But closeminded, knee-jerk, group-think certainly is. You people have a nice night. And maybe next time, you’ll take a moment or two to think before you react.

  10. November 16, 2007 at 8:25 pm

I’ll go on record as demanding that anyone, who says English is the language Deaf people NEED, is wrong.
It’s as simple as this: In 1972, after I’d been Deaf for 15 months, I entered the Georgia School for the Deaf.
ASL became my second language but I also noticed that the teachers, houseparents, etc. always demanded the Deaf kids speak and lipread.

I always got the impression that this demand was made because those same hearing people couldn’t learn ASL so it’s much easier to make demands.

    Laziness rules!!!

Folks… let me assure you, as a member of the Killoggs Kommunity, that Brandon is a wild-eyed, raving lunatic. He would love nothing better than to obliterate you all. Calling “Homeland” will do you no good. He has become Brandon, destroyer of worlds.

Or, you know, he could be someone who writes intentionally controversial things with his tongue firmly stuck in his cheek, seeing how many outraged cries of shock and disgust his words can garner.

Congratulations. Most of you have taken the bait… hook, line and sinker. You were too busy being indignant and (frankly) paranoid to notice that over two weeks ago, he revealed that his original post was a joke, and even gave this advice: “So, for God’s sake take your passion and use it as fuel, burn as bright as you fucking can, and whatsoever you do, don’t waste your time arguing with assholes on the internet.”

A lot of y’all skipped over the part you should have been paying the most attention to. That’s a pity.

I hear the deaf side the of this issue. But this guy is entitled to his opinions. Why do you care what he thinks? He hates deaf people. So what? I mean, if you are deaf, I wouldn’t seek him out as a friend. But why can’t you leave the guy alone? If you believe he has mental problems, then why provoke him? I think that’s mean.

  18. November 17, 2007 at 11:49 am

Just as a clarification posters on Killoggs can’t generally delete their posts, so don’t worry about that. Also, “report him to homeland”? Wow.

  19. November 17, 2007 at 1:48 pm

I went to the original post and bawled him out. But the jerk is right about one thing: there’s no picture of him wearing that mask and holding a gun at his original post. If you really did take that picture from elsewhere and juxtaposed it with excerpts from his original post, that’s extremely irresponsible. At the least, you should have indicated the picture was not originally displayed at the article you linked to. Preferably, you should not have used the picture at all. His post was extremely inflammatory and immature as it is, and doesn’t need to be embellished.

Karen, reporting him to Homeland Security? That’s a rather knee-jerk response. It smacks of Nazi Germany– any time there’s something we disagree with, report it to the government. However, I do agree the guy needs help of some kind, and we should report him to *someone*; perhaps the owner of the forum where he posted would be a most appropriate place to start. Let the host/owner know this kind of post is NOT funny, is not in a “humorous vein,” and should not have been permitted in the first place.

  20. November 17, 2007 at 1:52 pm

Oh, and one more thing, folks. The writer’s name isn’t “Brandon.” It’s a pseudonym permitted for use by any of the writers at this rather sophomoric site.

Killoggs reserves the right for any member or reader to actually be Brandon.

I suggest you all find the form to e-mail Josh, and complain to him, and let him know this kind of “humor” is inappropriate.

  21. November 17, 2007 at 1:59 pm

    My e-mail to Josh:

Josh (if that is indeed your name; at least you’re not calling yourself “Brandon”),

I found the posting by BrandonPatrick titled “You know who I hate: Deaf People” to be a completely inappropriate post for your site. As you no doubt noticed, the post was discovered and excerpted elsewhere, and has stirred quite a few people, who rightly found the content to be offensive.

The poster now claims it was a “joke” and no one should take him seriously, but I read the post and found nothing that could easily be construed as a “joke” in this post, and nothing humorous about it. All I saw was a hate-filled rant. In an era where this kind of behavior can lead to serious consequences and draw attention from authorities (especially if attention is called to it by concerned readers, as you yourself noted), it would be foolhardy to continue to allow this post to remain.

I strongly suggest you contact BrandonPatrick and ask him to refrain from making similar posts in the future, and that you and the owners of this site remove the post in question. This is the kind of “humor” we can all do without.

    Thank you.

    Mr. Sandman

    November 17, 2007 at 2:34 pm

Oh, Mr. Sandman, you have no idea how you have just delighted me by your attention to detail. It is true, and has been said many times, many ways: to some extent, we are all Brandon.

Also, if you want to be offended by countless other things that have absolutely nothing to do with deaf people, continue to peruse Killoggs. I don’t care if you’re an albino pygmy from deepest Africa, or a cross-dressing Ann Coulter fan – there is something on Killoggs to offend EVERYone.

If we’ve accidentally missed offending someone, rest assured we’re working on it.

  23. November 17, 2007 at 5:11 pm

I can’t believe i was taken in by this. I can’t believe how much trouble you went to to set this up… creating this wordpress, making all the other posts… you got me good this time.

  24. November 17, 2007 at 5:13 pm

Also, in the off chance that Mr Sandman is not also Brandon, I see that he posted an except from Killoggs’ TOS… I will post another excerpt here:

Killoggs.com is an entertainment site. No person or persons depicted here are intended to represent any actual person, alive or dead. All events depicted here are fictional. By posting here, you agree that you are fully aware that all events described on Killoggs.com are fictitious and that all “members” of killoggs.com are also fictitious.

By posting here, you also agree that you yourself are a work of fiction, and that your appearance in this greater fiction that is killoggs is by your permission. Furthermore, you agree that the staff of Killoggs.com, entertainment site, may make use of your fictional character and words for the purpose of future Killoggs content ONLY – any possible merchandising rights must be negotiated with you at a later date.

The balance can be viewed here.

  25. November 17, 2007 at 6:40 pm

Josh, you’re 100% wrong. I’m not “Brandon,” and I’m certainly not “fictional,” despite your rules. I never even heard of your site until today. It’s nice that you and your pals feel free to insult and offend everyone. I guess that’s how people of a certain age and mentality feel they have to do to get their kicks these days.

But however “fictional” you like to say all of this is, and how much of a “joke” it might be, there are certain responsibilities that come with participating on the internet and exercising your freedom of speech. I have no problem if people with a sick sense of humor like you want to exchange such posts among yourselves. More’s the power to you. But these days, it takes just ONE person whose mentality is dead serious to do something irrevocably wrong. Let’s suppose someone who really is a total bigot and does hate deaf people reads this posting by “BrandonPatrick.” This person has the limited intellect and ability not to realize that your website is one of “humor” and “satire” (and for the record, this particular posting is not “humorous” or “satirical” to me—in fact, it’s quite the opposite to my mind). They then say, “Oh, yeah, someone should go bash in those people’s heads.” Such an incident occurs. Legally, you might not be responsible; but the same wouldn’t be true ethically or morally.

Let’s take a real-life example of “fiction”: Today, on the web [CNN, etc.], there’s a story about a fake friend on MySpace that led to a girl’s suicide. There may be no legal consequences, but it’s obvious to most people that ethically and morally, certain irrevocable boundaries were crossed. What’s “fiction” to one person is a serious reality to others. Replace the word “deaf” in the post on your site with the word “black.” Would that be acceptable? The majority would disagree with you.

If you can’t understand this, then you *really* have some serious problems.

  26. November 17, 2007 at 7:38 pm

okay, mr sandman… i looked at your site and i believe you when you say you are not just brandon trying to stir up controversy. i’m not gonna keep cross posting, but i do believe you are not brandon. click my reply name for my (hopefully) final thoughts on the matter.

I am shaking my head, another late deafened person pissed off at the world that they have been dumped into.. I went to an ALDA convention years ago,, the first question I was asked,, how long have you been like this ( meaning deaf ) I told them, they said you are too deaf to be talking to me, and walked away, yep my jaw hit the floor, since when does a deaf person become TOO DEAF to talk to another deaf person. Developing a thick skin to something like that becomes a bit difficult. If this BRANDON is indeed a late deafened adult, then we will welcome him to our community and try to introduce him to our world, but he can not be welcomed if he is going to BASH the hell out of us, and threaten us.
Anyway..I can only advise the deaf who read the blog,, to take it with a grain of salt and IGNORE him, because the more comments this guy gets on HIS BLOG the more excited he gets by the attention.

  30. November 18, 2007 at 10:13 pm

the bottom line of it is that if you were one of the people who have been reading killoggs in the seven years it’s been around, you’d know it was utterly a joke… it was posted as one of a serious of over the top, hyperbolic rants, each one more ridiculous than the last. there is another similar rant from the same period that was all about how ALL babies are terrible and need to be killed, for example. again, that is something that no reasonable person would view as a real post, if taken in context, anyway… no one really reads our site that doesn’t know us, so everyone who would have any reason to read it knew it was a joke, just like EVERY OTHER post by brandon around the same time. it only became an issue when this blog found it in a random google search or something and reposted it out of context (and juxtaposing a completely unrelated picture of brandon that was taken months after the deaf post).

also, and this is probably another issue of context… when you view a rant on our site, where each user is represented by a smiling cartoon head, there are various random images, quotes, and page titles of an obviously foolish and comedic nature, and links to posts that generally are all overblown and sarcastic… the posts that are hyperbolic can much more easily be seen as a goof. the sheer fact that it’s being “said” by a goofy cartoon character makes it seem less serious. which is why we have the cartoon characters on our site, to help emphasis that very fact – it’s not serious. HOWEVER, when re-posted on a site that has a professional look like this one, and the presented with an unrelated image of a masked person with a gun… it looks like something else entirely.

anyway, the post has been disabled for now, at Brandon’s request, because he is busy and doesn’t want to deal with anyone else contacting him about it, just thought i would add in my final two cents.

  31. November 19, 2007 at 1:10 am

Josh– I don’t hang around on the internet 24/7, so I’m just now getting back to you. Obviously I can’t read your “(hopefully) final thoughts” on the matter, since you disabled the post (which I’m glad you did).

It may be “funny” and “satirical” to you, but regardless of any picture, the fact that you have a bunch of upset people on this site should tell you it’s NOT “funny” and “satirical.” Words have a power all their own, and they can be used to help or harm. In this particular case, these words are harmful.

You may think it’s all an inside clique, something that’s been ongoing for seven years, blah, blah, blah, but one thing you conveniently choose to ignore (and not mention) here: it’s on the internet. That means it’s PUBLIC. Anyone can read it.

Regardless of the “humorous” content elsewhere on your site (most of which I didn’t find all that humorous or satirical, but at least it wasn’t as bad as this particular post), each post that anyone makes on a blog or forum stands on its own as well as within an interrelated thread. Someone doing an internet search for the word “deaf” will run across the post. On its own, it’s a very hateful piece of writing. That should be a red flag to you, really. Are you really advising all of us stop and read seven years worth of humorless crap? You spent exactly a minute and a half checking out my site to verify whether I’m “real;” I suppose I should insist you stay a bit longer (like a week, perhaps?), and get to know my site, because you know, maybe you might get the wrong idea because you’ve only scanned one post, maybe two?

It’s very obvious to me that you don’t understand the deaf/Deaf community or its issues. A community that is still dealing with issues concerning language and the trivialization of ASL in the larger community isn’t going to respond well to a line like “Learn English, you motherfuckers!!” or lines about hearing tests where deaf babies are killed. The original poster, “Brandon” or “BrandonPatrick” or whatever he’s called should have known better, especially if he truly is deaf as he claims.

I still think you don’t really get it, regardless of your defense. I’m hoping perhaps you will look at this incident as a lesson in the power of words and the power of the internet, and the responsibilities that come with both.

  32. November 19, 2007 at 1:14 am

Oh, one more thing, Josh– cartoon characters can be used for a variety of purposes. A “smiling head” doesn’t tell me anything. Joe Camel is a “smiling” cartoon character, supposedly “harmless,” yet he was used to shill cigarettes, which are quite harmful. Try another defense, because that one doesn’t wash with me.

  33. November 19, 2007 at 6:59 am

Obviously, Josh & (as ?) Brandon are making many excuses by twisting their stories. It’s all about the petty ways they try to cover their asses and save themselves, by lying and making excuses and becoming something other than the best version of themselves.

Special thanks to Mr Sandman for his support. Bless him.

  34. November 19, 2007 at 10:50 am

Sandman, I don’t pretend to understand the deaf community or it’s issues, and don’t think I ever professed to do that, did I? I wouldn’t say I understand any communities, actually – besides possibly the ones I consider myself a part of.

Again, I think this post was mainly construed as some sort of “dangerous” post because fookembug posted it with the “hey it’s a joke” disclaimer (which was up there literally months before fookembug ever saw the posting) omitted, and then found an unrelated picture of someone with a gun from brandon’s flickr account and posted that as well. The image of a masked person with a gun is very powerful, and the juxtaposition of that rant with the image is not something Brandon ever intended.

I don’t personally see how anyone reading that post could have taken it as anything but a (not as well written) attempt at the sort of humor you see here, or here. Could those articles be considered hurtful by someone? Maybe. Should they be taken seriously as some sort of threat or discriminatory? I don’t think so. Would you suggest that the Onion not be able to write things like that? I certainly wouldn’t. Do I think that interactions like this one we are having now are positive and thought-provoking? Yes. Would I have taken the rant down had I written it and not Brandon? No (though I like to think, had I written it, it would have been even more obviously not serious).

Also, “Fookembug”… how am I “twisting my story”, amd why do I need to “cover my ass” or “save myself”? At first, I thought this post on your blog was a joke by Brandon himself, people have done that before, made fake sites to try and prank members of our site. After I looked a little deeper, I realized that that would have been wayyyyy too much work. Regardless, my stance has always been the same. It’s a joke, it’s not serious, it’s an intentionally over the top rant that was part of a series of over the top rants. Brandon even said as much right on the page you took the text you posted… you just didn’t choose to post the part where he said that, either because the fact that it was not serious would have defused the post you were making, or you just didn’t read down that far and see the comment.

Anyway, I took the post down because Brandon asked me to, and since he wrote it, that is his perogative. I didn’t write it, but even if I had, I would have no reason to “cya” or “save myself”. I would simply do what I am doing now, calmly and measuredly discuss it. This doesn’t affect me in any way besides my innate interest in (some might call it a deep addiction to) discussion. I like discussion and interaction, so here I am!

  35. November 19, 2007 at 10:50 am

Also – why do comments now need moderation? Until this morning, they posted automatically.

  36. November 19, 2007 at 10:51 am

Hmm, that is strange. Maybe the one I just wrote was too long or something? It told me that it was awaiting moderation, but then that last one went right through. Oh well!

Obviously, Josh & (as ?) Brandon are making many excuses by twisting their stories. It’s all about the petty ways they try to cover their asses and save themselves…

And just as obviously, your “twisting” (selective quoting, coupled with adding a completely unrelated photo from a completely different website as part and parcel of a “threat”) is just what you accuse Brandon and Josh of: pettiness.

You, sir, are deliberately ignoring the fact that your most cogent (and coherent) supporter has even called you to task for your disingenuousness in this regard. Yet you still ignore the fact, apparently hoping if you don’t comment on it, no one will notice.

Brandon’s post on Killoggs lacked taste and civility. Your post here lacks integrity. I’ll take an honest asshole over a deceitful “victim” any day. Congratulations on showing the world the “best version” of yourself.

  38. November 19, 2007 at 2:53 pm

A paradox is a truth that bites its own tale. All of a sudden, the act of opening your mouth to let fly an off-handed comment is audism. All of a sudden, free speech costs you & your site just like if you’re pulling the school fire alarms when there is no fire.

Hey, I’m deaf, I can type fine, and all that rubbish, but I want to say one thing: Deaf people have gone through lots of hardship, and one day this guy will see what it’s like to be deaf, he’ll see he’s just as bad as the anti-deaf then, and he’ll get dragged right back to where he started. Here in England, there’s plenty of hatred towards the deaf, and we just can’t ignore it. I am the only deaf person in my immediate family, and my rubbish brother teases me all the time about it, and one point is now clear: This guy is another bad person, and one say he’ll say this stuff to the wrong person, and get hurt.

I’m a deaf kid, I take Physical and Evolutionary Phsychology, I am an Assistant Doctor for my mum for poor African and Asian children with AIDS, who do not have Access to Heath-Care. I know a lot for a deaf child. I know that Posible Thumbs are a part of Basic Evolutionary Phsychology. Me and my mum, we’re very Proud and Confident partners in helping those with AIDS, Cancer, and if at all, Polio. Just want you to know that I am a Proud deaf African-American boy, because I know I have talent. I understand your hard times, but I wanted to make it clear that there are smart people from everywhere.

Deaf people are ok in a whole but i must say in ireland they are in some instances, lazy bastards. They live off the disability allowance (which is pretty generous at about €300 per week) with no intention of finding a job. I have heard of several instances where they travel to austrailia/usa etc for about a year and still withdraw their disability every month from their irish accounts. These are smart, employable people who take avantage of their benefits. Thats the only peeve I have. Thank you for listening 🙂

    Well…

I do have to agree with parts of this post here…although I do not call the deaf retards, I do feel as if they walk around thinking that they can get away with just about whatever they want…

I was confronted within the context of my last job, about supposedly being “rude” to a woman who came to my desk to check out after her Dr’s appt…also, I never stood a chance, as she came up to the desk with an attitude, and, as if that was not bad enough she is friends with one of the doctors and went after and told him I was not nice to her…all this after she came to my desk pounding her fist in front of me, because I did not look at her immediately so she could lip-read!

So, case in point…unfortunately now I think that deaf people take their disabilities too far and use them to get some sort of foothold to hold over other people’s heads…this is really too bad, because I would have been one of their strongest advocates before that incident…

    Sincerely,

    Tina W.

All I can say is really being deaf isn’t the problem, it’s a part of us having to deal with it. All you heaing ppl doesn’t know what it’s like to go thru this. Sometimes i wish i was hearing sometimes I don’t. but its a part of me i have to deal with. I take speech therapy. And I talk very good like a hearing person. I have a Cochlear implant and a hearing aid to help me hear. I grew up with a hearing family, went to a deaf school but didn’t like it, then moved back to hearing schools. I tried making some friends but they didn’t like me because of my hearing. The whole school was behind my back for my deafness. I didn’t know that. Until someone told me abt it. For hearing ppl: how would you feel if you were deaf, having to go thru these things and ppl were judging you for no reason. Think abt that. Being deaf or not, we’re normal ppl.

To Mr. Sandman: There is NO SUCH THING AS INAPPROPRIATE HUMOR!!! Either we joke about everything or we joke about nothing, the latter resulting in the consummate death of comedy. NOW– My 2 cents: I am a hearing guy with a wife that has trouble talking due to an injury to her head and jaw when she was 3 yrs. old. She grew up going to deaf schools and learned something that few of us know the hard way: MOST DEAF PEOPLE HATE HEARING PEOPLE. This is a secret that they’ll never admit to, albeit due to the change in people’s behavior towards them such a discovery would merit. LOOK: I can’t help the way I was born, just as most deaf people would say. That being said, A PERSON IS JUDGED BY THEIR ACTIONS, NOT THEIR DNA OR THEIR SOCIAL CASTE! Who knew that most deaf people were STRAIGHT-UP HATERS?!? My wife dealt with this kind of hatred in every deaf school she attended. Every single one. As a result, she now has 1 (one) friend in this entire world, aside from me. Deaf people need to learn that sticking to their own and ducking into some dark corner of society they’ve staked out is not going to improve deaf/hearing relations! We all need to learn to communicate and get along. Only then can we dissolve the social, economical, political and racial barriers that make this world so hard to live in.

I agree with this guy. Deaf people piss me off! At least the ones who actually think they are part of some culture. A CULTURE?! You are not part of a culture, you are disabled. You can’t hear, that sucks for you but accept it. Where is the blind culture, where is the mute culture? They don’t exists just as your precious deaf culture doesn’t exist. It’s a bunch of fools who feel sorry for themselves because they are disabled and they get together and come up with a way to feel “superior” to people who can hear. I saw a TV documentary on a deaf couple who actually wanted their unborn child to be deafened enutero so he could be part of their culture. Another couple refused to allow their child to receive an implant to allow them to hear, because they were so biggoted against people without disabilities they couldn’t allow the child to be removed from their wonderful culture! Those people are actually too ignorant to be considered human and so are you if you believe being deaf is anything more than a disablity. Gotta go, I hear someone calling me from the other room 😉 feels great!

you are a very thick sad idiot. You clearly have nothing better to do than to make others sad only to make yourself feel better. You may look at deaf people like that but, have you ever questioned the way others look at you. There must be a reason why you wear the sheep mask and it may be that you dont want to get beaten up so you are a pussy or that you are just plain revolting to look at, personally i think it may be the two combined together, god you must feel so unloved.

    WHAT A DICK YOU ARE!

Having been exposed to deaf culture just enough, I have had enough. All I hear is self-loathing, self-obsessed, self-pity. I am hard of hearing and made the mistake of becoming “related” to the deaf culture instead of just People. If you have nothing better to do than point at anything resembling injustice, or closed-mindedness than just stop and think. Do you really think hearing people get a fair deal in life? Do you think everyone is nice to those that hear? Do you really think being deaf is the only thing that can go wrong with you body? You should all be thankful that you have Only lost your hearing. I can promise you there are so many other things that can go wrong – health wise. So just give it a break, get a life and if you don’t have one Make one for yourself like the rest of us. I know, I could never understand, because I’m not deaf (only half deaf), and your right. I will never understand getting high paid jobs so my employeer can write off as an EOE and for tax exemptions. I will never understand being a member of a group (what you call culture) that just complains and only thinks of the self and not others. I will never understand how one, because of one single limitation, assumes they know all there is about lacking in this world. You sicken me. In my humble opinion.

You know some Idiots like to make stupid comments like this so they can see how many people they can get to respond and upset….then they sit back and count the number of responses and laugh…so when you see ignorant comments like this one that upset you, don’t give them the pleasure of a reply, so they can brag, ” I got 65-100 comment-ha-ha” I’m Kool” Crap like that. Now if he had of said something that was kind and polite about Deaf people and their Culture, only perhaps 5 people would have responded. So Idiots like him sit around wasting the little brain they have left, looking for a THRILL, instead of looking for a GIRL. I am not responding to him, my message is to everyone who did…don’t get caught up in the foolishness on the Internet. If questions and comments don’t stimulate your brain with Educational and cheerful thoughts, after the first couple of words move on, don’t waste your time.
