Good viewpoints! That is something we need to concern about! I wish I go back to old time and the Deaf community will be huge. My husband told me stories when he was young and when his Deaf parents were young, Oh my gosh…I was so jealous. I wish we still keep that way it is as what it was in the past.

Absolutely!!! Agree with your point that I know Deaf school has been reduce number of student than 1930-1980. After 1980 finally reduce percent of student attended public school along with ASL or PSE interpreter.

Also I notice ASL interpreter reduce. It is scary me! WE need ASL interpreter for court and important events in any of States.

Seattle , Two of ASL agencies sometime had to fly to Alaska and Montana because of lack of interpreter their state which they need a certificate interpreter for Alaska and Montana. Also Oregon have a lack of interpreter. but some of ASL interpreter fill up. No way to make up extra interpreter from Seattle to Portland or Salem Oregon, either.

Well. I agree that deafs should use ASL as signs, but I strongly believe deafs must learn English to communicate w hearing ppls.
Do you know why less and less deafs are in coffee chats, clubs, etc? Reasons are gossips. Many deafs feel hurt and uncomfortable, then start avoiding deaf communities. Last nite I chatted w a deaf person about the deaf chat at the Mall. She said no, she didn’t want to go cuz deafs always talk bad abt her and she said she did not do anything wrong, but they gossip abt her. I said well, they talk abt me, too. Hearing parents pull deaf kids out of deaf schools for their better world and life.
Why couldn’t deafs enjoy life and say anything like fun, jokes, weather, movies instead of rumoring against others? huh? We are deaf parents of 2 deaf kids. We were against sending them to deaf school. Our kids (now young adults) are happy and thank us for that to prevent them from that. They are along so well w hearing, but careful with deafs. I still believe that deafs should sign in ASL and write in English. What if deaf kids grow up and couldn’t communicate with hearings at work, ER, etc if there is no interpreter available? We are not against deafs, but we are so disappointed about fake gossips. I tell deafs to ingore others and face them in person so they look guilty and walk away, then u’d realize that they are gossipers. One guy said wow, tooo much jealous. I agree w him. Come on and have fun and join deaf communities with parties, chats, events. More hearing ppls would join us with ASL and they could enjoy with us. They (hearing) said wow, deafs were so drama. That embarrassed us.
    Thanks. Any suggestions to add??

I’d like to add that the deaf kids are getting smarter every year. They can read and write just like their hearing peers. As they get older, they are free to choose their own mode of communication, be it ASL, PSE, SEE, etc. to convey their ideas and thoughts.

Which identity language are SIMCOM, TC, SEE, PSE, and ASL because of their gestural hands ? What is the reason these cause people to have their mind confused and mixed- up.

Gosh where do I start !!!
Jason U are right residental schools are closing ( cos the state figures the money can be used better else where ) which is a crock of shit,, but thats how the government defines their usage of OUR TAX PAYERS money. I spent my school years from 1957-1967 so I grew up with your parents, and I was always envious of every kid who had deaf parents.. I also strongly agree with u about the cochlear implants, so many kids have been given those implants at such a young age that they will never experince the life of a deaf kid like I did or you and your siblings..
Technology has also been a reason for ASL slipping out of our culture,, first it was the cc boxes that were sold at JC Pennys, Sears and Montgomery Wards,, deafies stopped going to deaf clubs for movies cos they could stay home in their pajamas and watch movies …then came the free ttys ( in most states ) the deafies started talking to deafies on tty,, when a deaf event occured,, they would say naw im not going I talked to such and such the other night on tty..so the number of deafies going to deaf clubs and events DWINDLED..
then came the PC,, whooo,, then the web cam ahhhh.. less people were going out now ,, then the pager,, asl was not used..cos they didn’t HAVE TO sign..
About the interpreter evaluations,, yep u are so right, more and more HEARIES are taking over ASL classes,, and they sit in and evaluate the interpreter students for state certification or RID or whatever..If I recall,, there was one deafie who sat in the evaluations..but were they considered as TOKEN deaf evaluators ??
I agree ASL is becoming a thing of the past, BUT it does not have to bethat way,, maybe it is time for the deafies to leave home their pagers, and stop spending so much time on VP and start making an effort to meet up with other deafies and PRESERVE our precious ASL.. because if we do not, it will become something that will be in a MUSEUM.. sad thought!!!!!
That is my story/opinions and I am sticking to it 🙂

Im very agree with you and Yes you are right. And also I agree with everyone elses who is posted it this. As Im believe the next genration deaf Kids are getting Cochlear Implants will be without sign languages and will be use orally speech and lipreading and will be able go regular school instead of deaf school and so forth. That what the deaf kids parent s want to see next deaf kids genration to get cochlear implants as the parents want to see the kids be like normal hearing person.
That so sad!!! We need ASL keep alive!!! and Keep VP. We have keep fighting over to keep ASL and VP so forth.
Right Now Many doctors , lawyers, churches , etc . are not hiring Sign Language interpreter because cost too much money for that. That why Many doctors and audiologists are agree to have deaf kids getting cochlear implants. ASL , deaf school and deaf clubs will go down the hills. That so sad!!! We have keep fighting over it .

Hmm, your vlog posting is kinda a thought-provoking.

ASL could survive in despite of techonological advances and societal changes unless visual communication among humans are banned for some reasons.

ASL will be back as favorable visual language after the Neo-Luddities revolution against technology in 30 years. Who knows?

“Eyeth” ASL folkore probably will come true for Earthlings which the huge noise boom appear before us. So the deaf people with ASL skills will become more important than ex-hearing people.

Deaf people will rule the entire world as our dreams and desires finally come true.

I often have been called “cynical” or “pessimisstic” by many people on the deaf blogsphere. I still hope for the lasting use of ASL.

That’s why we must sabataoge the CI technology as soon as possible.

    RLM,

EXACTLY!!! WE need to stop doctor or the parents who naive knew nothing about ASL and put CI their deaf kids to became hearing.

Thank you for sharing of our support to ASL will never fading! Remind everyone CI would not working themselves. Unless hearing kids lost their hearing loss and CI might be helpful for them. But same time CI is bad idea for deaf baby or very small deaf kids have no power to communicate with their hearing parents.

For me, I would not want to CI and TEACH everyone to learn ASL!!

Keep our preserve of our ASL Language!

Oftenly hearies think that “D”deaf culture is nonsense. It has not hit them, yet that ASL is a precious beautiful language. In old times, deafies were neat, they were like ONE family. Today, it is totally different than thirty- fifity years ago. Oftenly, hearie parents are clueless how to guide deafie kids how to survive and be successful in the real world. They leave the deafies at the dark corners. If other deafies know what to do in the real world, then they needs to help the clueless deafies. Show them! Patience is required for helping other deafies. It would reduce the jealousy and completion. It is very frustrating for deafies who do not know what to do due to their limited understanding and communication. We need to get rid of the Crab Theory quickly. We need to do something instead of complaining and sitting back. Hearie parents look at the deafies community differently, because there is a very strong negativity…. Anger, jealousy, backstabbing, selfishness, etc. It leads the hearie parents not wanting their deafie children to be part of the “D”eaf Culture/community. I do not blame them…The question is if we want to keep ASL & Deaf Culture from fading away, How can we become united and show the world that we are proud of our ASL and our beautiful culture? It is time to do something.

Yes, Jodi. That is what exactly I have thought of something becoming in a musuem …in about 200 years …that something would be sooooo sad to lose! What can we do?

    I notice that:

    1. Deafies page more than signing.
    2. 80% attend mainstream.
    3. 20% attend residential.
    4. Few Deafies sign in ASL
    5. Most Duse hearing aids.
    7. More than 5 million deafies use CI.
    5. More deafies prefer hearie profs at Gally.
    6. Why deafies prefer hearie profs?
    7. Answer to #6: they miss teachers in
    mainstream.

we need to have deaf congressman, governor,or any other high deaf people for goverment, such as any doctor ,officers ,who are working and support for deaf people all over american and it might help the goverment to understand better…..

What about 185 DEAF lawyers in AMERICA that seem don’t help or suggest any law etc!
I AGREE WITH YOUR VIEWPOINT AS ASL NEVER FADE FOREVER!

I SUGGEST that all DEAF/HOH could write to Congressmen/woman, Senate ,President OF USA!

In CANADA IT SEEM STEADY TO KEEP ASL BUT WE STILL KEEP TO WATCH OVER IT OK

Huh mmm.. Maybe ….fade deaf.. Today the tech. are diffrents than in the past. They dont have TDD,VP, CC, Computer, Cell phone and the pagers. I remeber when I met the deaf peoples at any deaf events. We trilled and chatted all day but now I see everybody on the phones or pagers. The hearing aids get smaller and lighter. We dont like the CI because of drilling hole in the heads. I belive the hearing aids made smaller like a cell to throw in the ear and can hear better? Remeber the CC. was not build in the TV. Same with the CI chip build in the ear and the CC chip build in TV and can hear better?? Maybe they can install the CC in your eyes like you can hear.. Now Me strong ASL and I lost my speech at 13 ages when I entered the deaf school It happend that way. So We might melt in the pot. Blacks,Latios,White,Asian, will melt in the pot and become green? Alien? A new TECH. build us live better and live longer 500 ages? and smarter.. I belive in UFO and you cant tell who deafs or retards because they fix them.. Dunno if ASL will be last longer more than 500 years… Keep up with ASL forever.. Hope they can fix our hands if we lost our hands… : )

Yes, I agree with you, but not all. OK, talk about the deaf’s technology things( not CI). They do not hurt the deaf communites, deaf clubs, and deaf sports so much. Look at the hearing person, who have the cell phone and other things, he/she still can go to the night clubs or the movie.

Talk about the mainstream school. Well, I know that mainstream school is good for deaf for education only, but not all because deaf student can not join any social, club, and sport at the hearing school. Also, at mainstream school, deaf students know nothing about the deaf social and deaf world. That’s why they confused about what the deaf from the deaf school can do anything.

At deaf schools, the hearing teachers’ sign language is good? poor? I noticed that the hearing teacher teach the deaf students so easy and limit, not as same as the hearing school. That’s why the hearing parents decide to send their deaf kids to the mainstream school. That really hurt the deaf school.

About the cochlear implant. Some years it will be suck. I meet the young man, who had the CI since he was little. He told me that the CI was failure because he can not understand what the hearing person said. He never use it again and he use ASL. Other person who still has CI, read the lip because she can not understand what the hearing person say all time. So we better wait and see if the CI would be successful or failure in 20 or 30 years later.

Many times I watched the Internet about the deaf people tired of the hearing people control over the deaf. I wondered for a long time. Let me ask you. How many do the deaf have the voter registrar in USA? Many? few? If they do not have the voter registrar, they are losers. I want to tell you that the voter registrar is very, very, very important for the deaf because if most of the deaf people in USA are the voters, it would be equal with the hearing people.

    Let the ASL POWER.
