For your car because of your deafness

September 16, 2007

-Written by Bug

Imagine this! Worth to have it? Won’t be surprised if there is a new law in your state that requires you to put it on your car because of your deafness. We dislike ” hearing-impaired” becuase it categorizes Deaf people as “broken people” This label makes us seem less independent, less human. I would never want to have it on my vehicles no matter what. I don’t need people to know that I am Deaf or not in the public.

Not a good idea. It labels the driver for all time, implying that the driver needs special monitoring or considerations. Suppose we also had “visually impaired driver”. It could attract negative attention. If that becomes law, we could also see “diabetic driver”, “heart patient driver”, asthmatic driver”…the list could go on.

If there has to be this craziness, why not just a symbol instead, like the asterisk of the medical-alert bracelet? All it does is alert that the driver may have a medical problem; so that cops don’t assume a person is drunk.

That’s called flagging and it’s not allowed under the ADA. Florida had been trying to get around this by requiring deaf drivers to install large side mirrors to their cars.

I hate those two words. H…… I……. We are not “weakened, diminished, or damaged”.

You know people have their complaints about the service of police. We need to come up with some idea for police to recognize or become aware of our deafness. I agreed with Bug, I don’t want people to know about me being Deaf in the public.

    DISAGREED!!!

Police will ticket if they can became more negative and if people see the licnesce plate and hit on the purposed or revenaged for deaf driver. It will make worse?

Insurance is costly with deaf people feel flattered to force to use Hearing Impairment or Deaf. They can revenaged over and over.. I want to know who can share their expereinced from Louisanina? It is annoyed!

Think twice. That’ll help thieves and rapists identify where and who to victimize at their own times and convenience! It has happened before to other Deaf people who openly tagged their vehicle with bumper stickers or license plates with Deafness or ASL.

I think this should be illegal. “Deaf” on the driver’s license should be good enough, not “Deaf”, “Hard of Hearing” and/or “Hearing Impaired” on the license plate!

If the state requires this, then argue for your wellbeing and safety.

I like this Logo because it tells hearing people not to fix our ears. 🙂 Yeah I am being sarcastic here.

Its AWFUL. This idea would make us the deaf people look like in Third World … No way !!!!

Why not !!!! I have an idea: for hearing people to get the damn idea !!!

    New License Plate:

    “Brain Impaired”

    “Republican (or Democrat) Impaired”

    “Christian (or any religion) Impaired”

    YOU SEE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The word “anything with IMPAIRED” sounds really damn INSULTING !!!!!!

Final Answer: No way and No thanks.

Cheers — be proud Deaf, Charles

That’s funny. Good points you have, ccm14er!

Big mirror? I didn’t know that. Probably they think we have big eyes. “Flagging”…I like your word. Richard.

I don’t mind the logo itself. It might keep one of us from getting shot by a policeman when we are reaching for pen and paper.

Actually, I see nothing wrong with the logo, but it should be up to each one of us as to whether we want to make use of it or not. ‘Not crammed down our throats.

    Interesting post ……….

Gee! I agree with most comments above. I remember about twenty years ago, the TV news said that one rental car company in Florida used different letters/numbers on the license plates FOR the foriegn people to drive. Guess what? a few of them were murdered because of those license plates. Not long, the company immediately removed “foreign letters/numbers” license plate. Now, for deaf people? FORGET IT!!

    CCm14er,

You made a good point! But I can’t help to laugh!! Good one!

LOLOLOL I thought this kind of license plate is outdated cuz I don’t see too many of that around here. I wouldn’t want that on my car (no freaking way) cuz I believe it could lead to something drastic that you wouldn’t be able to control. Lots of weirdos and perverts out there (sad, I know)… Better to be safe than sorry. 🙂

Louisiana is so backwards. How many states still require that? I know some is optional. My bet is most of them are from the south, mainly southeast.

Alright everyone….stop here….there is no law and there shouldn’t be a law at all requiring everyone to label a deaf or hard of hearing person by any means of a bumper sticker or license plates however, I do disagree with it since I work with many police officers…it has come that many police officers are now in training to understand how to communicate with the deaf however, on my drivers license it says “restrictions” and it has a code on it…so when a police officer wants to know…they look up the code in the computer and it tells them that I require a rear view mirror and then how stupid is that?? they come to me and say “why do you need this restriction” because I am deaf!!!! It confuses the officer as to what the hell is that? He said it should say deaf/hard of hearing as a code…not a mirror because everyone is required by law to have a rear view mirror for car inspections. DUH…..I guess the laws just don’t seem to know what they are talking about and do not forget “we the people” are the ones that vote and make things into a law…WE NEED TO RETHINK how we put things into a law such as code a license driver for a rear view mirror???? Now let’s settle this part…yes we do have ADA laws, however….”we the people that vote” need to be careful HOW we vote and make these decisions. These are the things that go into law. Want to help the deaf/hard of hearing…read the fine print and if you do not understand…ask another person before you vote. Once made a law it is quiet embarrassing for us when we voted the wrong thing thinking we knew what they were talking about. Jamaica (the West Indies country) does not allow deaf people to get license because they cannot hear…imagine living there??? I drove in Jamaica and everything was just fine!!! It was the people that voted the same they do here in the usa. Think about it…dont go blaming the government….go blame the united states people when they hit the voting booths!! God Bless and have a great day!

i’m on a disability advisory board. that license plate would never be voted on. If a deaf person wants everyone to know they are deaf, they should make a bumper sticker to say, “Honk away…I’m deaf”….or should that be to spouses…or to teenagers…or to…?

If the State Governor sign the bills into laws so The governor will have his first issues license plate say “governor-impairment” or “dum azz governor”.

all deafies have human’s right refuse to get H…. I…. license plates due repect their private act by the laws.
