This is horrible. That’s got to be heavy for the kitty. And it’s 8 hours 5 days a week – the cat probably has no idea why it’s not on all the time – no say in whether it gets to wear it or not, etc. Poooor dear.

Fookembug, Thank you for this website. We hope to make this a difference by fighting against the animal abuses. I hope this article makes everyone to see it. We should do something about it. It is my firm belief that ALL creatures deserve the right to live out their lives in peace, comfort and harmony with the other souls of the Earth. Abuse in any form is wrong, and we should speak out against it whenever the opportunity presents itself. Please help all innocent animals before the evil force kill them.

Its a hoax. Poor kitty.
To be proactive, we need to adopt every deaf cat, including deaf dogs, out there before they go to the lab for this very purpose. The Deaf community has an obligation to prevent this kind of cruelty imposed on deaf animals.
When the Deaf community turns the other cheek, they are the last people to complain or get upset when they haven’t done their part in adopting a deaf cat or dog. If no one does, then they’ll go to the lab without us knowing. Let’s work together and make sure deaf animals are out of their hands.
Wait wait wait — it is not a hoax! It is true… they are using albino blue eyed cats with genetic deafness as lab experiments… using this research to support why it is scientifically beneficial for young deaf babies to get implanted!

— Animal study advances call for early implants in children born deaf
New research at Johns Hopkins has clearly demonstrated the ability of cochlear implants in very young animals to forge normal nerve fibers that transmit sound and to restore hearing by reversing or preventing damage to the brain’s auditory system.
The findings in cats, published in Science online Dec. 2, help explain why implants are up to 80 percent successful in restoring hearing in young children born deaf, but rarely effective when implanted in congenitally deaf adults, the researchers say.

The outer layer, or cortex, of a young brain exhibits a remarkable knack for reorganizing itself in the wake of injury or new experiences. In the latest example of this neural shiftiness, kittens born deaf due to an ear abnormality were then exposed to sounds through an ear implant. The animals sustained brain changes that rendered them able to perceive sounds about as well as cats with full hearing do.
The findings help to explain why kids who are deaf from birth can often learn to hear and speak using devices known as cochlear implants, according to a team of neuroscientists led by Rainer Klinke of the University of Frankfurt in Germany. In contrast, adults who have been deaf from birth generally find such implants useless, apparently because their brains no longer respond with sufficient flexibility to piped-in sound stimulation.
Deaf kittens given the chance to hear by using ear implants display marked alterations of electrical activity in the auditory cortex, a brain region devoted to sound perception, the researchers say. Nonetheless, the organization of the auditory cortex in these cats differs from that of felines who have heard meows, electric can openers, and other vital sounds from birth.
Klinke’s group placed ear implants in six deaf-from-birth kittens, all 3 to 4 months old. The animals lacked part of the cochlea, a swirly tube in the inner ear that transforms sound waves into electrical signals carried by auditory nerves.

The researchers used cats bred for laboratory use in their experiments. They measured brain processing of auditory signals in normal conditions, then compared deaf animals’ brain responses to sounds using cochlear implants and then the direct auditory nerve implants. These measurements employed neuron -monitoring technology developed earlier at U-M. The scientists found their sensitive 16-electrode microarray resulted in several advantages over cochlear implants.
Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1984, cochlear implants have greatly benefited profoundly and severely deaf people. More than 100,000 implants have been performed worldwide in the last two decades, including more than 1,000 at U-M.

Unfortunately, it’s not a hoax. It’s also old news. The kitty was a part of a hearing test lab at John Hopkins University about five years ago. It caused an uproar in a Deaf Ed forums board that pitted Deaf/ASL members against Deaf/CI members.

The photo looks like someone with a CI was fooling around with the cat. The device doesn’t look “secure” when dangling from the collar. It would fall off easily. I thought that cat should be wearing a harness with the CI affixed on the back.
It may be that THIS picture itself is a hoax and does not demonstrate the actual CI testing on cats.
However, the research itself is NOT a hoax. It has been done, and I would assume such research is continuing.
My guess is that someone decided to create a picture to call attention to this issue. While it might not have been very appropriate to do so, it still serves its purpose in getting us thinking about the ethical treatment of animals, and whether or not cats should be used for this kind of research.

As much as I’m against putting CI into cat’s head but then again, what can we do? No matter how much we hate the idea of this, but it doesn’t matter whether if they are deaf or not, there has been animals testing for many many years which has disappointed me. I really am feeling sorry for these animals.

In 1957, the dog was sent to moon to test but did they care if the dog never made it back? NOPE. And don’t forget about rats, they have been using for several purposes to test such as shampoo, any kind of chemicals you need to use in your home, bug sprays, hair sprays, etc.

They give a lot of good information about how these poor innocent animals being suffered so they know if it is safe to use on humans. So the biggest question is how can they test to make sure it is safe for us if it wasn’t for animals?

Animal testing is required before the scientists can go to human testing. This is true of anything used on humans, from makeup to new foods and medicines, to medical devices and new surgical techniques.
Sigh.
The scientists never ask people if they want to hear or have a new cosmetic or a new drug…they just assume it will be in demand and go on to test many, many products, most of which never succeed to go to human testing or to the market.
And there are millions of “sacrificed” animals sent to the incinerators when the scientists are done with them. If scientists had to go through a review board that examines the need, the risks, the possibility for success, the amount of animal sacrifice, and the cost to the public, we would have much less testing.

I remember a many years ago, I read an article on animals have been experiments at the lab research. I was angry about the way lab people has been torture on animals. For example, a picture of beagle dog laid on the rack was burning on his/her side cause it tear and bleeding. Same with CI on any cats. Poor cats. They’re suffer enough.
Imagine, cats screaming *meowing…meowing…meowing..” dogs scraming *howling…howling…howling..”, and so on.

Kevin and Ocean1025, that was me who posted the pic of the cochlear implanted cat as an avatar on AllDeaf.
Some of the AllDeaf members (some of the proCIers) decried it, saying it is a hoax and same time saying it is okay to test on animals. Unfortunately, due to the harshness and cruel comments by the CI members of AllDeaf, the cochlear cat thread was either locked or thrown into the trash by one of the mods.
I found the pic in a PDF file on a scientific study group’s website ending in ‘edu’. Yep, it’s the URL as Fookemandbug posted: http://www.jhu.edu/ryugolab/pdfs/kretzmer_etal_2004.pdf !! So, that is NOT a hoax. The picture is real. The cat is real. I feel bad for the cat having to carry that pack around!

I have a guide dog and rescue rodents. I am totally against animal testing. Particularly as deafness is not even fatal and the money that goes to torturing these poor animals will be taken from deaf services.
Of course the animals are not the only victims in this affair. Deaf babies are being implanted when they are too young to be consulted. I think this is unethnical too.
Why did people like you think it is a hoax? You need to accept the fact that the lab scientist likes to test on animals for no reason. It is like a LEGO thing.
We should have a deaf lab scientist so we can experiment on hearing people to see how they feel like they did to innocent animals AND babies, too.

I do agree strongly with you that deaf babies are being implanted when they are damn tooooo young to be consulted. The deaf babies NEED to be loved instead of implanted! The doctors and hearing parents are so stupid and they think what is the best for the deaf babies!! Some could be succeed, but some could be suffering! I believe that the hearing parents CAN learn ASL, a deaf culture, and be a part of the deaf world, so when the deaf little ones become adults, they’d thank their hearing parents! I KNOW, KNOW, KNOW that the hearing parents will NEVER take it. They just cry/weep just because their little baby is deaf. It makes me damn mad!

Why putting that stuff on poor cats? Keep them inside for their safety. I keep both cats inside for years and they live like loyal. I am deaf and both cats are hearing. I would keep any deaf cats inside instead of going out and getting hit by cars or attacked by dogs or mean kids. This is interesting, but in all reality, the cat doesn’t care weather it lives in a lab or outside – as long as it has interaction. This, to me, is not necessarily animal abuse – but testing weather or not cochlear implants have an effect on animals as well as humans. If children wear these implants 24/7 why is it so cruel for a cat?

Hey….I would not allow my black cat that is deaf to have cohlear implanted cuz I taught him how to read my sign language. He understands my sign language (eat, come, bye, points at his food or things, wait, and window what he knows) and he thinks he is lucky because he would not want to be implanted.

Many of us who are Deaf are very opposed to this Cochlear Implants and it destory our Deaf Cultures. that poor cats had to go through like Deaf people who choose to implant by Cochlear Implants. it was very painfully surgery. Most Deaf people are force by parent when they were young and babies at the time. Alot of Hearing Parent with Deaf children often thinks Deaf will not learn or able to readlip. I know many hearing parent are worry how to communicate. The Answer is Sign language(ASL- American Sign Language). Most of use hardly readlip. I would say about 95 percent of us are not able to understand the readlips. only 5 percent who are able to readlips well. In facts, Cochlear Implants is very dangerous due infections, magnet problems,not able to hear at all(mean not working with Cochlear Implants), it hurts when you are around with this Magnet like Airport dectector or Hybird cars because they have magnet too. Funny…it amazes me how “scientific achievements” can be greatly overlooked by animal-rights folks. Despite favorable results to improve one’s quality of life through science…for animal lovers, it’s all about what happened to the animal and the heck with science or medicine.
That rationality doesn’t make sense at all because I can bet you my bottom dollar that these are the same people who benefited from past animal experiments when they had to take medicine for whatever ailed them in the past. If not them, I am sure their family members benefited from medicine in some shape or form.
As posted previously, “animal testing” has been a long standing practice in the field of medicine and science. Let’s rationalize for a minute here…shall we? Like everything we do in life…some things need to be put to test to determine if it will work or not…and if the product warrants a living test subject…would you prefer to use an animal or a human?
I, for one, don’t want to see humans tested on when an animal can be used as the primary subject for testing. We all read about the cruelty of “human testing” performed by the Nazis–and how the world cried bloody-murder when this was uncovered. Do we want to find ourselves in that predicament? I don’t think so! So what is the next best living thing to humans for testing purposes? Animals, of course!
Now…just because I am a proponent for animal-testing…that doesn’t mean I don’t condone animal abuse like in the case with Michael Vick from the Atlanta Falcons. Dogfighting is pure cruelty and totally premeditated from beginning to end. It served no benefits to mankind or to any field of studies other than to fattening the pockets of participants in that criminal enterprise. Additionally, that environment permeates violence–such as the killing of dogs that do not perform to their ill level of expectations. Who is to say that those violent acts committed by such folks wont spill over to our communities?
So in this rebuttal, I have depicted two scenarios to help us examine the differences between blatant cruelty against animals and animals used for testing to help mankind. Stark differences, I would say, with different end results. So before we cry “animal abuse”…let’s examine this subject matter as intellects and differentiate the true meaning of the term “abuse.”

Doesn’t say who paid for the $40,000 piece of equipment and surgery. 4. That is not where the receiver goes on a person, why would it go up on the skull on an animal. Let’s say this is not a hoax. Why is it so bad that animals have cochlear implants. It could save their lives if they can hear what is coming after them, like a dog or some wild animal or something else. They can hear their owners opening a can of food or something like that. Also why is it so horrible to the animals and not to humans. Humans have that kind of surgery and we don’t think it’s wrong but whoa be a cat or dog or some other animal who has it done to better their lives. To me that’s sad thinking of you ask me. So if my cat was deaf and he/she had a chance to hear WAY TO GO for the surgery. That’s my input on it.

My name is Caper, I am Deaf White cat. I looked almost like the one with CI on, I don’t have Cochlear Implants. This is very sicken one. If I knew who did this, I would have my mommy (Owner) to report that person to Animal Cruelty. That person is also SICKO. MEOW in ASL. My heart goes to my friend who is burden with CI.
I fail to see what’s so sad about this (if this particular cat is indeed a genuine test subject). The cat only has to wear the implant 40 hours a week, the length of a standard workweek. As silly as the processor looks on the cat’s head, it is not hurting him. And as long as the scientists treat such research subjects kindly, what’s the big deal? It’s not like they’re inducing deafness in cats just to study them. That would be cruel.

Its a pretty sure bet that, in order to be able to see at various stages of development, cats would have to be killed for vivisection. I’m almost positive that the 1 cat you see is their “poster child”, and that implantation had to be practiced many times on many cats in order to “get it right”. This is outrageous behavior that Lab/Medical Scientists doing like this to poor Kitty Cat ! I’m opposed Cochlear Implanted onto any form of the animals and children. This is so ugly to look at Cochlear Implanted when I see it. Thankfully, I’m an adult, otherwise,my parents would have whisked me away against my will, to have a cochlear Implanted or maybe both. I preferred digital Hearing Aids. Let’s us, deafies, keep on fighting against Cochlear Implants to save Animals and Children.I will make a report to the Animals rights for help to fight against Cochlear Implanted. Wondering, who’s invented it ? That, I’d like to know….

My husband had a cochlear implant, bothe ears. It was sucessful, he can even talk on the phone. Guess what, we were BOTH disappointed to learn that cats are being used in this research.
As smart as these scientist say they are why can’t they get away from using animals?????

All of the comments AGAINST using animals in horrible experiments should be sent to
senators and the president and the secretary of agriculture. Boycott ALL products and
all companies who use animals in experiments. Look online for cruelty free companies.
The only way we can stop this is to stop buying the products and SPEAK OUT every chance
we get. I have written to Obama and to Mrs. Obama and to senators and the secretary
of agriculture. Wear them out with phone calls, faxes, letters, and emails. We can
bring about change. LET YOUR VOICES RING OUT IN THE PURSUIT OF JUSTICE FOR HELPLESS

i think its an amazing thing the cat gets a second chance to hear again and it doesnt look all that heavy. As long as the cat is not geting harmed i love it n hope it helps out the human side too especially my boyfriend who can not hear either…. i hope he can get it and his insurance covers it.
