Why did Hearing People Take Over?

January 29, 2008

By Jimactor

Transcript:

Hello, I want to share the story as I feel a little disappointed about hearing people. Why? For example, I am an actor. I read the script and the story has a deaf character. I am thrilled and auditioning for that part. The audition downsize and they already pick hearing actor who will play a lead role as deaf. Why? They say that the hearing person sign very well. To me, it looks like they try to save money on interpreter. They say it is good enough for him to hear and use sign language same time. I puzzle myself as I am 100 percent deaf actor. That’s why the hearing people always take over.

Another one, in ASL class, I used to be an ASL teacher. I am very eager to teach ASL. Same time, I am very curious to see who teach other ASL classes. I find out that the hearing people teach ASL classes. Whoa, wait a minute, why did they take over and teach ASL? What’s wrong with deaf people because ASL is our culture. You know but they say, as long as they can sign and see nothing wrong with it. Plus, most hearing people run ASL classes. The hearing people take over! Why can’t they leave deaf people alone and allow deaf people to take care of it? I feel disappointed!

Thirdly, the worst part is, do you remember that I tell you a story about deaf travel agents? I am very proud and support deaf as you know that there is a thousand hearing travel agents out there. I put deaf travel agents names on the left side of my blog with their permission that I can use their names. A few days later, I get lot of emails from people, they say that I have two faces. At first, I did not understand what they really mean that I am two faced. They say that I support deaf but for hearing, it is enough. They say I put/add the hearing name with deaf travel agents. No, no way, I puzzle and did not put/add the hearing name in it. So, I check to make sure if I did not put/add in my blog but it looks same to me. I puzzle again and talk to my son about what happened. My son puzzle in disbelief and say no. He finds out that person sends lot of emails to people who subscribe his. He gets our original information which is four deaf travel agents as he adds one hearing travel agent in it. What’s up? Why did hearing person take over? He does not like to see that the information is for deaf travel agents only, he wants to put hearing in deaf travel agents. STOP! I already get their permission but he addresses to put it without their permission. It is wrong thing to do. I still don’t understand why hearing people still take over? Why can’t they leave deaf people alone? There is many deaf people that did not get job. It is hearing’s fault because they push deaf people out and take over. What’s up? Why can’t they leave deaf people alone and allow deaf people to make their own life? Successful, you know what I mean? Why? I really am disappointed. (show image) Thanks for watching me. Thumb up.

I agree with you, Jimactor. More and more hearing ppls take over ASL courses at comm. colleges and HSs. My two kids who are deaf were invited to go to ASL classes with their hearing friends. The ASL teachers criticized my children about their ASLs and the teachers teach hearing students much different signs than deafs use ASL! It confuses us alot. My both kids flunked ASL tests!

ASL teachers told hearing ppls that both of my kids were very wrong about ASL and told them to use correct ASLs. huh?

What about Marlin, the famous actress? She still works on TVs and movies. Leo (the Hulk), too. Jim, keep up with your best. We love you, Jim!

  3. January 29, 2008 at 2:09 pm | #3

I want to share a story about my brother. He is ASL instructor like you. He did once told me that one student criticize him that he was wrong. My brother asks the student, who told you that I am wrong? The student refuse tell him. Until the class is over, he asks the student to tell him the truth. The student told him that another teacher who teaches ASL said that my brother is wrong. Guess what? The other teacher that teaches ASL, that person is hearing. What give them a right to criticize deaf people who teach ASL? Like you said, deaf people understand ASL as they rise into it. Its sad, but it has to be pride or power trip over deaf people. It has to stop.

I agree, too many hearing people take over and tell all the deaf people we sign wrong or whatever. Who taught them ASL in first place? Us deafies! First of all, hearing people who have the need to take over deaf people is because they are insecure with themselves, they wanted to feel the power of control over deaf people, I wouldn’t be surprised soon enough deaf people will have had it and want to start a strike against hearing people controlling deaf. There are so many deaf people can’t get job, we don’t get to become boss, or promotion. I have been skipped for promotion so many times I couldve been vice president by now of a company. The famous statement of hearing culture at work enviornment is ” We are afraid you wouldn’t be able to understand people, the interpreter is way to expensive because it comes out of the company’s funding, and most people isn’t ready for this”. What you think of that?? OHH you have no idea how mad I got over this! How many jobs I’ve lost because they feel I’m too expensive??? BULLCRAP! They just don’t want to deal with us. Not only that, they hire people who know ASL and use them as an interpreter for me? How low & cheap are they??? They are the ones paying hearing people higher salary and keeping all deafies at a lower salaries. SUP with that? We need to do something about this because clearly hearing people still think we are stupid….We need to take a stand for ourselves and prove to people we are not stupid! They don’t need to take over us.

By the way, hearing people is treating deaf people like mexican people who can speak spanish. I notice now America is Spanish/English speaking only. Oh please…What about ASL? They give spanish people better jobs than deaf people?!?!? How about that?

Be very careful! My husband told me the story that he went to a bowling tournament in Tenn and a deaf businessman who showed his booth about a cruise. Some deaf people made a deposit. They never saw the money again and no cruise trip.

I picked Deaf Passage Cruise because I heard the service was very good! I went and had a good time! There are deaf staff under the Deaf Passage!

I believe in quality (service free of deficiencies.)

I refused to watch your video!

Yea, Lou the HULK did his best to speak well cuz his parents ingored him and treated him like low-leveled. He wanted to prove them that he could do like hearing ppls. He made his success. I read about him years ago. It impressed me and deafs could do that in their own ways to prove that deafs could be like hearings. One guy told me that he felt sorry for me cuz I am deaf. I said huh? deafs could do everything like driving, working, skiing, etc except we couldn’t hear at all. He looked shocked, then he asked me out for a date.

My daughter was invited to ASL course by her ex-bf at U of AZ. The ASL teacher said all bad things about deafs to hearing students like “deafs are dumb”, “low-leveled”, etc. That other teacher at Pima Comm College kept saying too much negs about deafs. My daughter and her ex-bf went to the ASL supervisor to report on this teacher, then supervisor went to see her. The teacher kept denying. Most students now look at us like “dumb deafs” and sign very easy to us. The teacher told them that most deafs didn’t understand ASL. huh?

Most of hearing ppls are no patient with us deafs at work, etc.

I am sorry about the fact that you did not get the part and I see the injustice. So now the hearing person who learned ASL is at fault? Why is the actor at fault and not the company? Damned if we do, damned if we don’t. I have absolutely no hostility towards the Deaf Community, why am I under attack? Because I express a respectful opinion?…Jodi

Jim I am really sorry about the audition, it sux, but thats show biz as they say.
Problem is the deaf community needs to take lessons in ASSERTIVENESS..to stand up for what they believe in, and stop being victims and not let the hearing folks run over us and take things from us,, if we let them they are going to use all of us as door mats..
I am sick and tired of deafies complaining all the time how every one is unfair to them, but really there is a way to beat them ,,,,,,STAND UP TO THEM AND SAY,,, LOOK I WAS HERE FIRST,, GET OVER IT,,

I teach ASL and Deaf Culture at the community college for 10 years. Many time my students asked “Can a hearing person teach ASL at school?”. I answered, ” If it is okay for the hearing persons to teach ASL then it should be okay for me to teach Woman Studies, Black Culture, Speech, or Native American History”.- Bug

Yeah, at work we were asked to teach basic ASL signs to our co-workers. Somehow, one co-worker who knows ASL but has poor receptive skills immediately volunteered to teach the class. We were baffled and disappointed because she is hearing. When she taught the mini-workshop, she gave so much detailed information about ASL when the co-workers only wanted to learn basic ASL signs, they kept asking her “when will you teach us signs!”….. Sigh!!!

Back to comment# 13…hey – its not always deaf business person doing “rip-off”. Same thing with hearing business persons done many “rip-offs”. Let me give you a advise – at booth, see a travel agent, ask to show travel or CLIA license with photo as ID. Then this person is safe to buy trip package from. I personally work part time for 2 travel agencies – Deaf Globetrotters Travel and The Sunset Cruise Agency – both are licensed agencies.

And to all others about quit whining. I do agree, deaf people also need to stand up and show something. Of course, its sad to see hearing taking over. But we need to stand up, speak up and show them what we can do.

I agree with Jim. Yeah i know it always happened in Ireland too! It is very difficult to deaf people to get jobs, hearing always won! Deaf losers! I would like to see new state law against hearings but it unlikely. I advise to all deaf people need more power in the future but not delay. Met Jim in Deaf cruise last year.

Hearing people take over because they can. They have the power already, and they want to remain in power, so they control their power by taking acting roles cast for a deaf character and teaching ASL classes. I do think, however, that some hearing folks are altruistic and teach ASL because they truly want to help. Others may be involved because they learned how important ASL was to them because of a family member or friend who needed to use ASL (meaning, there was no real choice).

I don’t feel like I can comment on this completely (then why are you doing it, you may ask), but I feel somewhat justified when I think about white professors or others teaching African American literature classes. On one hand, I think that they don’t have the experience, the life, the platform, or the knowledge from which to teach it. I truly have a problem taking a class with a white prof on African American lit for this reason. On the other hand, I think about the general lack of black folks in academia and, from my experience, the dismal dearth of folks of color in the English department, so if the white profs don’t teach African American lit, who will? And, if they studied black lit, do I really have grounds to deny them the opportunity? And doesn’t Affirmative Action allow them to teach whatever in the heck they want to teach? Slippery slope, right?

But I think your concern is not if they are allowed to or disallowed to teach ASL or act roles of deaf folks. Your concern is should they be able to take those jobs from deaf folks if a nonhearing person is available and opened to taking that job. I don’t know. I think this will go back to an Affirmative Action/EOE issue. Back to your initial question, “Why did hearing people take over,” my answer remains the same. Because they can: they have power to and abuse it regularly, knowingly or unknowingly.

Oh, I am so disappointed! I know what you mean, really!
I’ve been teaching ASL classes for five years and I decided to have a break because I need to work on some projects (drama/ASL) for the next year, and I wanted to give a surprise, but a couple of hearing people took over to teach ASL classes without me knowing. It sucks and I dropped a whole project. It’s so sad to give up my dream.

After reading all these hateful comments toward hearing people, I’m glad I made the decision to drop out of the interpreter program I was enrolled in. Are you people serious??? Do you realize that you’re animosity and anger toward hearing people is no different than racism? sexism? religious discrimination? The “us against them” mentality is getting boring and highly annoying. If you don’t like your world, take the necessary steps to change it. Everyone in the world suffers injustices. EVERYONE! Black, white, male, female, muslim, jew…. Like, what makes Deaf people think the world owes them anything?

Taking pride in Deaf culture is one thing. Openly slamming hearing people… just disgusting. How many young white males can’t get onto the police force because they’re only accepting minorities at the moment? How many people have been refused jobs because they’re women or because of the colour of their skin? Being a woman, I’ve definitely come up against all kinds of things that are unfair. Does this mean I should hate all men? Or never go into another establishment owned by a man? NO. CAUSE THAT WOULD BE STUPID AND RIDICULOUS!!!! And it would make me no better than them!

For your information, I LOVED signing. I still work in the Deaf community and have a couple of very close Deaf friends who are very dear to me. This was my only reason for entering the interpreter program. Not because I wanted to “help” Deaf people, but because I thought it was a very interesting culture. But the attitudes of jaded, angry, lazy, people like the people whining and complaining on this blog, made me wash my hands of the whole thing. I’m PROUD to be hearing, as you should all be proud to be Deaf. But don’t let that create hate boundaries between yourselves and everyone who can hear. We are ALL HUMAN BEINGS!!!

You don’t like the way things are? Get off your butts, stand together, and change things! You did it before at Gallaudet and you can do it again! The only thing standing in the way of achieving that goal is the constant complaining, and “woe is me” attitude.

P.S. For the person who was talking about a white person teaching african american lit/history? I say if you know the content then teach it! I’m black and I don’t care. If you know what you’re talking about, I will listen. How much or little pigment your skin has doesn’t matter to me.

I agreed with comments #25 and #29 about asking deaf travel agent if he/she do have CLIA license before purchasing cruise package.

Back to comment #13 Peachlady, It happened to me same once at deaf bowling tournament in Fort Lanuderdale, Florida. My friend begged me and trust my friend to go cruising with friends under Sunset Cruise Agency, because my friend had been cruising with Sunset Cruise agency, Terzino Bomprezzi for few times. So we agreed each other for my deal. I went cruising with my friends under Sunset Cruise Agency. I finally met deaf travel agent, Terzino Bomprezzi on cruise ship for my first time and explained him about my experience with other deaf travel agent. I never thought of it when deaf travel agent, Terzino Bomprezzi showed me his CLIA license that this one I never forgot. I lost my deal my friend, then I trusted what Terzino Bomprezzi said. I had been cruising with him for few times. Terzino Bomprezzi did a wonderful job. I will go with him again for his last cruising this October. I still stood up with deaf travel agent, so I can spend my more time talking with deaf travel agent than hearing travel agent. My next cruising with another deaf travel agent, I will ask one of another three deaf travel agents about CLIA license in my future.

Why do you ask one of four deaf travel agent about CLIA license?

SUPPORT to any DEAF business Growing!!!!

  33. David
    January 30, 2008 at 2:50 pm | #33

I agree with Random in post 31. I too am pretty disgusted with some of the whining and hearing bashing in the
previous posts. I am hearing, my brother is deaf.

Why are many sign language teachers hearing? Think about it. Instructors who teach a language – say, French to
English speaking people – need to know both languages as fluently as possible. You may know ASL extremely well but
if that is the only language you can communicate in then it greatly hinders communication to the audience that
only speaks the other language. Yes, some deaf people do a great job of both speaking and ASL but many more do
not. I am a hearing person who used to teach sign language to hearing people. (BTW, I did it for free.) I wasn’t ‘taking over’. I did it out
of love and trying to give hearing people a better understanding of deaf and deaf culture. Are there deaf people
who could teach way more ASL and deaf culture than I know? You bet there are! But I was at least able to give some
of my friends the ability to have conversation with my deaf friends in their own language. From there they could
hopefully learn more from the deaf.

Post 8 – Puzzled – thinks his hearing employer is ‘low and cheap’ because they don’t want to hire two people (him
and an interpreter) to do the job that one hearing person could do. Why do you seem to feel it is your ‘right’ to
have your employer pay twice as much to get the same job done at his/her company? I do computer and networking
support for a living. Most of the day I am on the phone with other hearing people. If I was deaf, it would be
ludicrous for me to say my employer should hire a hearing person to listen to all the phone conversations, then
interpret them for me, then get my response and interpret that back to the customer and so on. It would double the
employer’s cost of my job, it would slow down the service and annoy the customer. I’m not saying deaf people
should be shut out. I am saying you need to be realistic about you ability to fulfill a particular job role.
Because my company is service oriented about three fourths of our operating costs are for personal. If we doubled
the number of employees by each person having an interpreter, it would probably bankrupt the company.

I am against discrimination. If you can do a job as well as the next person it shouldn’t matter if you are deaf or
hearing or black or white or Asian or what ever. But if you are unable to do a job without special consideration
or hiring a second employee (the interpreter), it is not discrimination for the employer to hire someone who can.
It is just common sense. What if a blind person demanded to be a bus driver and insisted the bus company hire a
sighted person to tell them when to brake or turn right or left? Sound silly? That is how it sounds when you call
an employer cheap because they won’t hire a second person to help you do a job you can’t do on your own.

You want hearing people to back off and stop ‘taking over’ but you don’t seem to mind using a hearing person when you want your employer to hire an interpreter. I have also never heard a deaf person complaining about the free TTY relay service (or the newer video relay), both manned by hearing people. Is it your desire that those hearing people should stop ‘taking over’ as well and close the service?

Puzzled – In post 9 you also say you notice America is Spanish/English speaking only. This is not true. There are
MANY languages in America including ASL. It IS true to say America is MOSTLY Spanish and English speaking. Why??
Because there are MOSTLY people of English and Hispanic background. That’s like saying China is prejudiced because
in China they mostly speak Chinese.

I do believe there is real discrimination out there. I’ve even experienced it. An example is a time I was in a store with a deaf friend. A salesman stood up and was about to walk over to us to help us. Then he saw me signing to my friend and assumed we were both deaf. He sat back down and pretended he didn’t see us. In that case, I don’t think he intended to be mean. I think he was embarrassed that he didn’t know how to talk to us. I know there are many valid examples where someone IS being mean and that sucks no matter who you are.

I’m just saying that when you are down on all hearing people you are no better than the people you are complaining about. Poster Random is right about that. You don’t want hearing people to ‘look down’ on you but that is exactly the attitude that many of the posts above are showing to hearing people.
Be realistic about what is and is not discrimination.

It looks like it is a best thing for a deaf person is to set up his own independent business in which where he can run his own way, hiring deaf workers. Just because ASL is used by the deaf, it does not mean it belongs only to the Deaf folks. The babies are learning ASL and are not Deaf. We do not own ASL, do we?
Whoever learns ASL is like a deaf person, anyway. Suppose an American learnt French, he is allowed to be a French actor as he speaks it fluently. Why not?
    Who owns a language? Everyone…

    January 30, 2008 at 4:44 pm | #35

Just because Deaf folks use ASL does not mean ASL belongs only to the Deaf people. Who owns this language? Everyone is free to use any language as long as he/she is fluent in it.

    January 30, 2008 at 9:56 pm | #36

    Boy!!
I cant believe it is such thing to rude to our deafies The hearing people should mind their business and leave us the deafies alone !!

  37. January 31, 2008 at 12:00 am | #37

Oh boy, I have to clarify this. What I really mean is that when the job is opening, the director is looking for actor to play as deaf character. The deaf and hearing actor have the same experience. He picks him over me. I am 100% fluent in ASL while he does not but he can sign. DUH.

Call me whining? ROFLMAO! Look at Gallaudet, they protest because they want deaf president! Also, Amy Cohen Efron’s infamous ‘The Greatest Irony’ Check her website, http://www.greatestirony.com/ No need to say more.

Basically, ASL is most complicated language that the hearing people have hard time to learn because any one word in a language often has a number of different meanings. Also, the hearing people like to criticize deaf people if they sign wrong while the deaf people don’t criticize their speak.

    Hi Fookembug…

I will be happy to share my experience as ASL instructor at a local vocational education center 23 years ago. I am a graduate of Gallaudet University and I am also a state-certified teacher of deaf students. In 1985 I accepted a night teaching position in ASL I for hearing adults at a vocational center in my community. A hearing instructor who taught ASL I was assigned to teach ASL II at that time. Some of the hearing instructor’s former students took my class. During our first class meeting, four students left in disgust because they did NOT agree with me that some words such as… “run”, “walk” and “birthday” have two or 3 signs. Those students claimed that there was ONE sign for all words, as their former hearing instructor explained. I tried to reason with them that no matter where they go, they will always find a different sign for some words mentioned above. I also brought films to help the hearing students learn more about Deaf Culture. Guess what happened? The hearing instructor heard about it and felt threatened. He reported me to the vocational center’s administrator. At my meeting with the administrator, I explained to him that as instructor of ASL I, it is my responsibility to teach the hearing students aspects of Deafness and to
show 2-3 sign words for several words not mentioned in the textbook.
The administrator decided to observe my class one evening. What happened? He was speechless when he saw what the students had learned.
I asked him to “teach” with me. He laughed and said that he had NO problem with my class. End of story. Deaf instructors of ASL do not need to worry about a hearing instructor teaching a similar class. They need to be more resourceful, and try to find ways to make the class interesting. That is what I did, and I still do in college where I teach ASL I.

I am reading all comments of list that very interest what about the hearing pple take over from deaf. I am agree with Jim in 100%. Also they have problem with hearing pple about ASL too.
I had expeienced in my work for 27 years, I worked as toolmaker in shop. I had enough to be suffer with the most hearing pple who not friendly to me as deaf worker but few who always friendly to me because they knew ASL.I know most deaf always complained and frustrated with the hearing men because of audsim and discriminate. I retired after laid off.
Now I attended the Baren and Noble Bookstore for meeting with ASL group in the lobby every friday nights. I teached with the group who learn in ASL. examlpe the storyteller, good humor and chatted. I noticed most the interpreters students are women who take in ASL classes than men but few can signing in ASL. My group understand about the deaf culture vs the hearing culture and english vs ASL. I am good reading but my english is fair as not prefection grammars. You know what I mean?.
Our Deaf Culture Camp of Minnesota for interepreter students in camping at the wilderness fellowship camp in Wisconsin every summer. The campers who involed in our activites and class for fun. I was cooked and deaf counselor too to help with campers in camping.

If you want to make sure Deaf stay in control of ASL classes, then the Deaf community needs to be competitive. Encourage (urself, others, young people) to get their MA and PhD in education, language learning, ASL, Deaf studies, Anthro. Don’t just sit and complain – get the skills needed to win and keep the jobs and leadership. I remember when I applied to graduate school – I would stay at home at night studying but my friends would question why I didn’t just give up and go bowling with them. That’s not helping. Complaining is not helping. Getting in and doing the hard work is needed to prove in the same way that Deaf CAN (and yes, it IS hard and confusing and frustrating and lots of work…and lots of tears and anger). If u want the job, do the work, get the skills, and show u can compete and win!

Wow!! That’s all I can say about what the deaf people are saying. I have to admit I agree with them even though I am hearing, it is true how in the hell can a hearing person tell a deaf person how to use ASL correctly and also try to explain deaf culture?? It makes no sense to me especially growing up in a deaf world.. There is definitely a need for the deaf to unite and fight the cause.

Well, ya know old saying, “May the best man win”. I do not believe that he was picked because he was hearing, but perphas his acting skills.

As you know even Deafies would choose hearies over Deafies very often. I own a well repuated remodeling/renovation business, and always gave Deafies a 20% discount….They would still choose other companies to do their projects because they would think that the hearing could do the project better than us! Look, Deafies are doing to themselves!!!! I do not whine, as I believe the best man win, and my business is still strong, thanks to hearies! They do not pick me because I am deaf, but my business repuation.

We, Deafies should NEVER feel that we are losing grounds because of hearings, we should never whine. We should stand strong and do our best. We lose grounds because we started to feel sorry that we were not those “best men”, and not trying to improve ourselves for better.

I am born Deaf, and still use ASL without any new signs due to nationality, PSE, etc as I do not believe that a language should be changed, nor modifed due to complains. A language is a language! It stays the same.

That’s life, we need to deal with that. If you ever feel that you was discriminated, go to proper agencies as you do have the protection.

I think the job shoud be given to the best qualified person. I am hard of hearing AND hispanic… I know a thing or two about discrimination but I dont whine I get educated.
I learned Spanish from my parents first and school later yet that does not make me the AUTHORITY in the language. I dont care who you are or where you come from..the question is can you TEACH the language.
knowing a language empirically does not make you qualified to teach it even if you are Deaf and the language is ASL show credential and prove you can do the job better that the other person hearing, hispanic, deaf, black, yellow, or blue IT DOES NOT MATTER
now all interpreters MUST have at least an AA degree and prove that they can master TWO languages(in Texas) not an easy task folks!
let have more UNITY instead of trying to separate the Deaf from the hearing the black from the white this is America people! let’s get along

Why are you assuming that hearing are not as good as deaf……..

Look at the individual or the business not at the fact they are hearing or deaf.
If it were not for hearing interpreters working very hard to understand the language and become certified interpreters the deaf would still be oppressed.
We are there to help communication so you have an equal chance for a job or to let your needs be expressed.
Many hearing interpreters flew to DC to make sure that the protest was successful. Interpreters who live in DC volunteered many hours of their time. We are in your corner.
Interpreting for a cruise is hard work but we want deaf to have that chance to enjoy travel the same as the hearing.

The answer is simple: Deaf people need to quit COMPLAINING all the time and, become MORE ACTIVE.

Also, like in many places, some deaf have a big chip on their shoulders and, decide they don’t like a deaf club and, conspire to set a different for themselves, thereby splitting up any strong coalitions/groups.

It happens ALL the time and, they don’t care.

When deaf begin to wise up and, work together for a more powerful deaf, politically, in community, etc, that’s when the deaf will be “listened” to!

Finally, if you have never registered to vote, keep your political complaints to yourself! If there’s a problem with your SSDI, Retirement, etc. Unless you voted, we don’t need to listen to you.

To comment #13 – NOT true!!! My deaf friends live in Newsport News, VA and went to their agency office often and met their staff/workers – ALL are hearing!!! NO deaf employee working there daily!!! Actually, I know some of their deaf staff (from other area/out of state) as “volunteer” to assist them in exchange for free cruise room but had to pay for airfares and hotel in Miami themselves – NOT permanent work, just during that cruise time! You are blinded! They were surprised to see their agency place – huge with many offices and bar/social room – they must be rich! (See all Deaf agents – just one or two deaf workers small office – work harder!!) I witnessed many deaf tourists didn’t get tour tickets and that PDT agency gave them a coupon book (buy one and get one free stuff inside cruise) in exchange of refund for no tour tickets so they reported to hearing cruise manager and she got pissed off and said coupon books were not accepted (see…they got money first place but didn’t give refund back to them, just coupon book??? – that was BEFORE Freedom of Sea). Some deaf people were smart enough to speak up/fought to get refund but other naive/low minded deaf people accepted it, not getting real refund – we and interpreters felt sorry for them. This was reason why I won’t go to their cruise! Wake up!!! Prefer Deaf agents – with license, of course, to support and help deaf business to grow and accomplish for our future deaf children becoming tourists some day!!!!

To comment #25 – she is correct about license as I knew her as honest deaf worker. Check license PLUS CALL to cruise customer service/representative to make sure your name is listed there with cabin number there as reserved before paying full!

Deaf agent Terzio Bompeii. is great, always check each table during dinner time, asking deaf tourists how was their tour island trip, enjoying/having good time? everything ok? He liked to check and hear their comments and make sure everything went smooth. He also provided his own party with a BIG ILY (\|m/) ice shape by ice artist, snacks and unlimited drinks for all of us one evening – nice of him! I’ll miss him greatly after retirement and will try other 3 deaf agents.

Can you provide me information about DeafCruise.com – deaf agents? good one? I need to find one to Hawaii islands and this agency is only one offering Hawaii trip in 2009. Please advise!

Be very careful about using an agent who does not give you a full price when you send your deposit. The agent is asking for a deposit and telling you that details will be sent later. Some people sent their deposit and got a huge bill alot more than hearing people recieve.
This person is saying he has a booking for 700 people but if you call the NCL cruise line they will tell you they have no booking for a deaf cruise. They do not take reservations this early. Why is this person asking for a deposit when he cannot even reserve the places on the ship. And why is he using deafcruise website which is almost the same as Terzino. He is pretending to be Terzino so you will be confused and book with his cruise.
Please do not book with someone just because they are deaf…..

  62. concerned person
    February 3, 2008 at 11:31 am | #62

you are wrong when you say that deaf people are only used when there is a cruise. There are outside agents working for passages right now and they earn money. They do not volunteer their time. They are treated just like anyone else who works in this type of job. IT was a big money risk for them to book this cruise. If you are doing a charter it is much diffrent than booking a cruise. You must guantee you will fill every cabin, if not then it is your loss. Since they work mainly with deaf, they have no need for office staff until it gets busy again.
I am looking forward to the next all deaf cruise to Mexico and thank the staff at passagesdeaftravel for working so hard to make deaf people’s dreams come true. Are you saying no one should buy a car unless a deaf person made it, should not buy clothes unless a deaf person makes them. Why say only travel with a deaf person. Many hearing have a big heart and do good things for deaf.

To that comment#60…may I ask you to contact me since you’ve known me and Terzino. It was sweet of you there.

Also to this comment#61 …yes, I’ve heard about this particular trip for 2009 sailing with NCL. This trip rates are not even ready. So be careful with this.

I read one of the comment that a person paid deposit and received so much details and monies to pay. Anyone who want go on trip should had asked for more details and extra more money to pay BEFORE pay the deposit. We always tell all details before take deposit. We want to make sure the traveler be fully understand. We want customers to be happy.

I personally not against hearing travel agents. But it would appreicate seeing deaf business suceess. That’s all that matter to me.

    To “Concerned Person”comment #61 and #62

That deaf persons who “volunteered” for Freedom of Sea are close friend of ours and told us everything. That deaf persons dont work outside deaf agent for them and not make money. #60 comment is correct and made good comment about deaf agent walking around meeting deaf tourists – that showed “caring” agent. Where were Mac and Tab? Wehad not seen them the whole week except on shows!

We understand Deaf tourists are various, some prefer joining huge group (like softball tournment/large deaf convention) – PDT good for them – more fun and like to meet many different people.

Others especially for olderly ppl prefer small group – Deaf agents good for them – more quality of time to know each other.

    TJ/Concerned Person,

Thanks for information about Deafcruise.com – it is in Arizona and I found AAA cruise catalog that matched to Hawaii 2009 prices for “early bird deposit”. I’ll fax Deafcruise ad to NLC customer service to verify if valid or fraud before doing further. This is only one we are looking for – fly straight to Honolulu to stay for a week w/ friend then hop to the cruise right there.

Know any deaf tourists been going previous cruises hosted by Deafcruise?

Peachlady, please don’t jump too far/ just ingore other’s comment – you are correct about other deaf agents in the past that we have to be careful – they were trying to form a group but failed and didn’t return refund. Need to warn first time deaf tourists to check license first or check with friends who had experienced traveling and make recommendation. You were fortunate to have good time and had no problem with PDT and we respect your choice. We were ones of unfortunate group w/ no tour tickets for few first days that caused VERY STRESS on us/senior citizen people and no one helped us to solve quickly and even no apology plus no refund due no interpreter for us – stuck w/ hearing lecturer all day!

Actually both hearing/deaf agents – no difference – my hearing family got tour tickets from hearing agent that turned out to be fake!

I am proundly Deaf with big D… teaching ASL classes, what frustrate me is… what I have SEEN with my own eyes… I’ll say about 80% of hearing people TAKE OVER, take control over TEACH Deaf babies, children, teenagers, adults… so forth right after my teaching… What break my heart is make those deaf children UNEXPLORED, separate from us – Deaf, these DEAF babies, children, teenagers ARE BELONG TO US, DEAF people, DEAF communites, DEAF WORLD. let us be the ONE to teach these DEAF because they will definitely EXCITE, because THEIR DEAF BELONG TO OUR HOME – DEAF!!! Secondly, I just found out about ALL OVER Canada, DEAF has HARDEST part to find job what their dreams of, become independent, OWN business, or anything that we CAN DO without HEARING’s spoon to feed us! Know what?! 92 PER CENT of all over Canada HAVE NO JOB!!! All of them end up to depend on welfare, EI, etc because of 1) hearing 2) immgirant people from countries to Canada, 3) Hearing cheap salary versus Deaf wonderful skills 4) lack of communication (Hearing prefer duh-hearie than learn to communicate via write English/READ English. They prefer to HEAR anyone’s voice, not READ their words, etc. LAZY!!! HOWEVER, I also learn something else worsen! about 20 % of hearing DON’T READ OR WRITE in Canada, BUT for Immgirant – much worse, DON’T READ/WRITE English about 60%!!!! That way – TOO MUCH!!! What’s wrong with Canada Gov’t, with blindfold!!! Duh!

    Hello again…

I have read all comments, interesting, make me thinking over, quite understand in your perspective, plus somewhat agree with:
With my add comments to ###…

#3 – ASLpride, if anyone criticize you sign – correct signing? You have to tell them, it’s part from “today” signing, instead of Signed Exact ENGLISH (S.E.E.) always give us-Deaf headaches! Explain them again. SEE is not acceptABLE to ASL… dysfunction signing cause some bad signing (include no-no language!)…

#6, Pax: Deaf own businesses? what they have businesses? me Deaf, do have “lousy” businesses, want to own something that no Hearie can do alike me?! curious what Deaf have businesses?

#7, Wake up Deaf People? They ALREADY have been oppressed, weary, brain-washed to be “can’t do”, I can’t, etc… who fault? Are you also wake up, speak up, yet?

#8, Agreed… what we do? with these oppressors to change their hearts by our “aggressive”? That’s not work that way! if Passive, we will fail! Assertive? How, nobody teach properly way?

#11, Guess what? I went to Deaf Cruise last year, by hearing agents? whosoever from hearing!!! Quite disgusting, Way too EXPENSIVE, plus they didn’t refund my money for cancel Haiti tour. They DIDN’T SEND ME, NOTHING! With my advise, DON’T GO there again, go somewhere ELSE! Not with Tab & Mac!

    Continue…

#14, Kitty? true.. ouch about negative comments or teach hearing negative deaf… With my professional teaching, I rather teach them with positive comments, encourage them to respect Deaf, HOH, etc. sometime they ask me dumb questions, I do gratitude to answer them politely with gentle way, encourage them to read on articles about deaf, etc, plus internet. What website that I should give them, go read on… I won’t give them any websites that belong to Deaf (mind their own business!) I search for students to read, comment, join whatever OUTSIDE or subgroup under or connect with deaf community? groups, that won’t do harm or mind their business in Deaf people?

    #18, Jodi in Holland,
May I correct you, let you know, you’re fortunately lucky!!! Why? In Europe, Holland, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Spain (?) are way beyond (far better than) here Canada and America ONLY SOMEWHAT… for They do have law enforce or Government that order adults (especially PARENTS of deaf baby/child to take courses of ASL (HSL, BSL, FSL, SSL, whatsoeverSL, etc) for FREE, encourage them to do the best for their own deaf child, see if the child can hear? speak? whatever but again, Gov’t ALREADY request all of them to take courses of SIGN LANGUAGE in their countries!!! but here Canada have NO law or request, still have HUGE problems with language, cochlear implant, etc. against us-Deaf… Still they do oppress us !!!… Heck – guess what… I stuck – have to live with this?! Sigh! in American, do have A.D.A., they did GOOD job, still more to work on! Way go, America! and kick Canada – do something better!?

    #21, May I suggest to Fookem…

I wonder, while white person learn Japanese or Chinese language that not their true language, fairly good skill…then go over to Japan or China, teach Japanese or Chinese people? So are, we with true language, have knowledge of Deaf culture, Deaf “etc” or everything with Deaf… be the true one to teach ASL!!!

    #22 – MJ,
ouch, what we suppose do? Do something! Basic/ Advanced should STAY in Deaf, I truly love to teach these levels!!! Sigh!

    #30, Agreed! Why not!

#31, Don’t drop out interpreter prgm, We – Deaf DO NEED YOU!!! I understand so many Deaf/Hearing conflicts. However, you can teach Hearie positive about Deaf, and teach DEAF, encourage them push aside their attitudes! Be gratitude!

    #33, David,
You can teach as your own personal only for your brother’s sake. I think these hearing people use you, take advantage of you, use you because of free?! I’m sorry to tell you… You already abuse us-Deaf! Of course, for me to you, you’re forgiven, because of your ignorance! I would suggest, why not instead of you, give the job to your Deaf brother? Or isn’t he also not aware much about his own culture, community? I dont know… Otherwise, if it’s only personal, limit session, encourage them to GO the college or wherever there’s DEAF instructor or instructor WITHIN ASL professor, well knowledge (with Ph.D.) Just logical justify for us-Deaf’s sake… Agree – better remove attitudes, be gratitude what you have on your hands…

    #39 – Irene Tunanidas
Curious what you bought films to help hearie learn more about Deaf culture? I see too many “junkie” – fiddle diddle doo tapes/videos whatever… I bought some no-good or not-true comments that I frustrate with! please specific, ISBN #, title name, etc… who made, where buy from? etc… with pretty please?!

    #45 – R Thoryk
Agree with you. However, I wonder about these “isolated” deaf child to become ASL instructor without meet Deaf or knowledge about Deaf culture? How does it work?!

As for my CODA buddies, never ever accept criticize from other Hearing interpreters!!! unless theirs with “Dr” degree! Cuz of your true language WAS 1st language – ASL WITH OLD sign language because of your DEAF parents/siblings etc! I do value YOU, CODA. My truly love with those oldest sign language!!!

    #47 – Timbo,
Yes, definitely take all courses to know YOUR true language! You will benefit better teaching with RICH informations!

#56 – true, need Interpreters to clarify interpreting in VORS, in person (one to one, one to many!) Get professional worker!!!

    To Travel Lover…

Sorry for not response sooner, been out of town recently.

Back to this comment #69, frankly I don’t know who did went sailing by DeafCruise. But I do recall one person…an old man I felt sorry for. During DeafNation Expo in St. Louis, MO last year – doing booth advertising. While I was out for a break, my boyfriend, Samuel, volunteer helping out. A old man came up to him, complaining about a cruise trip that he had paid for but not get anything. It was all day to near end of event, Samuel finally found that old man and brought over to me. I had no choice but advise this man to keep contact that agency who he paid for. Told him that he was not in my agency group. I won’t be surprise if its from DeafCruise because of confusing with website – ours is http://www.deafcruises.com and other is http://www.deafcruise. I hope that man finally got what he needed.
Yes, there were several people emailing me or
Terzino by mistake or complaining to us. We couldn’t help it, but advise to contact to that agency.

To this comment#77 – unfortanely, no phone or tty nbr there at cruise.com. I did check it out. Only way you could is register there, perhap they or someone will response you with more further detials. But I am sure that NCL know this deafcruise.com. Because I do deal with several cruise lines, in their system, they have information about website. Add to this, I do know name person which is “Ben” working as solo agent. I don’t know last name, I haven’t really in contact with “Ben” yet.
To this comment #84…you had tried to contact me, but this Sunset Cruise website was down due to construction. You could email me at either tjadventure@aol.com or meldertravel1@yahoo.com. Come on email me. Wink

    Hello, Travel Lover:

I can answer to your puzzled… Freedom of the Seas – that way too much expensive over $4,000. for just one week minus one island that cancelled. I said, go somewhere else – Deaf cruise (I don’t know any agency? or what its all about). I email to my friend far EAST, to see if he and his friends know more, will tell me more information which agency, they trust? OR let me know. What I think, is REASONABLE price for 1 week, for all tours, etc. I’m little disappointed but best let go, not go back again with this Deaf Passage Travel (something like that). Not just me, few other people, back EAST (Maine-Marine islands) also were disappointed, too. Anyway, waiting for whosoever Deaf have small businesses… still curious!!!

The deaf cruise company is run by Ben Pena and many do not get their money back from him.
Terzino is honest and is very friendly on the cruise
The reason why it was more money for PDT is because it was a charter cruise. You got to all go with deaf, if you were in mixed and hearing it would be less money.
That is the cruise line’s rules. Mac and Tab did not socialize because they were sick in bed with the flu and the staff had to take over. Both were very tired from working many long hours sending out tickets to 4,000 deaf cruisers and answering many emails every day……Please give them a break.
I plan to go on the Mexican cruise. I am afraid I will miss a good time if I stay home.

    concerned person,

pls read p.s. on comment 74 – don’t bother bring up pdt/hearing agents to this website – conflict with topic about hearing!! keep ur mouth seal XXX and go and have fun w/out telling us about them! THINK of deaf agents – reading ur comment abt pdt/hearing agents over and over – showing prefer hearing, not deaf to hurt their feeling! ok?
mac/tab weren’t sick on 1st previous southern caribbean cruise 2006 w/ smaller group & still didn’t socialize or walk around during dinner time to introduce themselves & brief chat. no meeting on first day of cruise to introduce themselves and their staff and explain what to do either. i wanted to have pic of them with my family/kids but hard to find them. i had problem/need help and went to deaf help desk nearby but that olderly hearing man (sherry’s husband) doesn’t know how to sign! i asked where interpreter? he dunno. they dumped their partnership – deaf olderly experienced agent(lady) from fla to shut her mouth about them not treat right and not help to deaf senior citizen ppl having a lot of problem. give them a break? no thanks!!!
terizo hugged us every night during dinner time – bless him/smack+ \|../ to him!

comment#79… 92% hearing impaired in Canada are jobless?? Whoa and wow….that’s awfully alot. Can you tell me how many hearing impaired there? Here America, last time I heard was about 28 millions.

comment#81… European laws requiring parents of deaf child to take sign language courses at no cost. I envy that. Wish every parents here the same. It will bring more communication better with those who less fortantely in communications, (in which I’m one of them). But I do notice foregin deafie that I met or saw online…seem to me that most of them are oral? School over there mixing speech and signing? Forgive me if I’m igorance.

Who do you think could run and do errands and sign papers and make sure everything is running smooth on the ship if Mac and Tabitha greeted and talked to everyone. Someone had to take care of the charter ship. They cant be everywhere and take care of your individual needs. There were 123 interpreters on the ship with black shirts on that said “interpreter”
If anyone had a question why not go ask the front desk. Why so critical of people who tried hard to give you a great vacation. Is anyone greatful????

comment 92 – please stop bring up about mac and tab in this website about why hearing taking over deaf – enough is enough! this for support deaf agents/workers!

friend went there and described mac/tab’s tavel office – look like a huge brick house/manison for rich workers – laywers, doctors, etc… not same you see most hearing agents in shopping area with one big room and numerous desks. open door and go up stairs to 2nd floor then open door and see long hall there. see few offices on left for sherry/hearing agents and last left room huge w/ island wallpaper for tab, middle office for other young hearing lady agent and right room is big for social with bar. look very expensive to lease them. they afforded to hire john maurcer for his show and got deafnation guy so that helped pull all deaf tourists to come – swallow all money from deafs’ pocket, kissing them. sad/sorry for deaf agents, hard work, can’t afford and can’t accomplish like hearing agents!
hey all deaf agents – can you get together to work to create deaf cruise – look at deaf president at gallaudet can do it except hear! i support and go for sure! prefer my $$$ to deaf agents, not rich hearing agents! i liked cruises by deaf agents – blast times – better than freedom of sea – ok-ok.

Hey Tab and Mac (or to loyal one to get them to read this please!)…if you are really Christian, we want to see you both to say APOLOGY here for not be there to help us/deaf senior citizen group to solve problem quickly -no excurison tickets for 2-3 days and should send us refund for not able to go sightseeing islands plus no interpreters too. You Tab were stone cold on 1st day at St. Thomas in AM when we tried to speak you about tickets then you both were no where to be found to help us at cruise in evenings. We sent personal/cashier checks to you and Sherry early and were very distressed b/c no records of our names in their computer system and RC staff couldn’t help us. Back to comment 105th deaf ministry –

Best way for you to EDUCATE hearing people to RESPECT Deaf people/their culture and not take advantage of them. OK to help with full understanding/good heart/kindness about deafness and culture without hurt them especially senior citizens – get confused/get break down.

Important to educate hearing people they must sign real good and loyal to deaf people if becoming interpreter, not just trying to pass b/c of high good salary. If lousy interpreter and get real good pay – this is wrong! Can screw up Deaf ppl especially job interview. If you see them not doing properly, TELL and educate them as we need u to support us.

I was in line at cruise watching deaf guy with cp (hands/arms signing sloppy) asking hearing lady agent (u would know who) questions/need help. She didn’t understand – said again. He signed again twice slowly then she said rude comment with big signs – I don’t understand you – as no patience. That cp guy was helpless and gave up. I understood his question clearly – disgusted me. No respect,no patience, cold face/heart – I felt like to slap her face! Bad example of hearing agent – need to educate her – she should said sorry, hold and let me get qualified interpreter to read your signs and translate for me – that would solve problem quickly!

I found my interesting about hearing agent, Kristen Fox’s life through her webstie. Why do Kristen Fox copied Deaf travel agents, Terry Glansanti, Don Hahn, Terzino Bomprezzi and Dorothy Garner’s website (desgin) and intinerary closing date from deaf travel agent’s itinerary. Examples:
Our deaf group including the interpreters picture, appreciation letter, _\m/ I LOVE YOU ice carving and tourist pictures. Terry, Don Terzino and Dorthory are 100% deaf and had many years of experience as deaf travel agents. They can help you plan the perfect vacations, the perfect honeymoons and class reunions. Kristen is not deaf. I felt like that Kristen Fox STOLE their buisness or destroy their dreams!!!

Sunset Cruise Agency, Terzino Bomprezzi had his frist idea about I LOVE YOU, ice cravingfront of deaf group in cruise ship. I was there to be proud what he was doing to deaf people. Terzino Bomprezzi had great the process of work with deaf group on tours and cruise. It is not Kristen’s business to copy Terzino’s idea ILY. Why she copied Terzino’s idea ILY, ice craving front of deaf cruise people so she can pull more deaf people to buy her business growing.

Jimactor told story about information which of our deaf travel agents as Jimactor or Fookem or Bug or JlfMad put and add one hearing travel agent in it. NOT Jimactor, Fookem, Bug and JFLMAD. This person is Kristen Fox did add. How dare she do it without their permission. Kristen wanted to destroy their goal or succesful.

Kristen began learing ASL lesson until she will improve smoothly in ASL. Do not Kristen be ASL teacher in her future.

WHy can’t Kristen Fox take her job interpreter instead of travel agent?

I spoke with Ben Pena. He has an attitude you would not want to associate. I called NCL and learned no booking by their agency as yet. No rates are available to ALL TRAVEL AGENTS, big or small, until late April or early May for summer 2009 cruises. Spoke with top management and they recommend that anyone unsure is to file complaint with Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Scottsdale, AZ or AZ State Attorney Office.

    February 13, 2008 at 1:13 am | #115

I had a lousy interpretuer one time must have passed in the lower half of his class. Most of the ones I have experienced were great and are great friends with the local deaf. The deaf club here welcomes anyone hearing or deaf. I have seen a lot of division of people even among the deaf here. Even some insults to deaf for not being deaf enough. God forbid if some of these people were not born deaf. How can deaf get ahead with an isolationist attitude. I guess it is time to have a deaf country. If you are born to hearing parents, thumb your nose at them and move away because they are hearing. If you were hearing and became deaf, you are not accepted. Sorry Lou F. you are not deaf enough. Forget cochlear implants they are trying to be hearing. I prefer a mixed world. There are not always deaf businesses available. A hearing person’s intentions are not always bad. Have you asked a hearing to order food? I have seen some that thought they were helping and were happy to help get put down for doing it. A kind no thank you works well with those who are just trying to be helpful. At this rate why teach hearing the language and community most of you don’t want to communicate with them anyway.

i had been in both 2 cruises – RC (the one Tab/Mac prefer) and Carnival. RC is more luxury, cost more than Carnival – not luxury. So that is why Deaf gloverotter travel costs cheaper than Passages deaf travel on same intinerary. RC is nice/luxury but I like Carnival better b/c of bigger stateroom, bigger NICE bathroom and even bigger closet for male and female separately. RC has tiny shower and no room to put big suitcases! Hope Deaf gloverotter travel will win over PDT!

Ice Cream 24 hours on Carnvial cruise not for Royal Caribbean.

For my first time I cruised on Royal Caribbean (RC)for Passages deaf travel last October. RC embarkation was awful, because there were alot of deaf people waiting long line. I finally walked to counter and finished check-in in about an hour from long waitng line. It happened again on RC disembarkation was very awful what I ever saw this one. Get off on the ship about time, but there were alot of crowd people bump to bump each other waiting line in cruise stairs nd hall to get out of ship door.

For Carnival Cruise was good proceesing embarkation and disembarkation on almost perfect time for hearing and deaf passagers and cruised on Carnival Cruise for eight times with Deaf travel agents.

I choose on an excellent Carnival cruise is over Royal Caribbean.

I agreed with the no. 115. Today is a change world — Global Marketing. Electronic Communications use by all kinds of people; especially for the deafies. History of the ASL; the way of signing preferences were started back in the 60′s and 70′s. The begin of the RID (Interpreters) established by the deafs and hearings alike. Then the RID eliminated the first charter of the deaf supporters later on. Then begin downfall of the characteristic of ASL signings by all involved — the interpreters, educators, hearings and deafs alike.

Deaf Globetrotters Travel told us their customers prefer to use Carnival for many reasons. Fun ships, better food, reasonable priced cruises. Passengers can use the extra money to spend on land tours and luxury items.

I cruised with Passage Deaf Travel and Sunset Cruise Agency. I did enjoy my time on Freedom of the Sea last October. My option to suggest you any cruise destination trip with small group through deaf travel agent in the coming years. Small deaf group are worth and feeling like you know them as families but not. Nothing to me for Deaf Freedom the sea They just wanted to see old friends from class reunion from school and college. Best group are average than many.

I already booked Grand Mediterranean cruise with Sunset Cruise Agency this October. My deaf travel agency Mr. Bomprezzi is an outstanding service arrange my great vacation ever aboard Carnvial Cruise. I will be exciting for sailing new cruise ship, Carnival Freedom. I am looking forward to next deaf travel agent when Mr.Bomprezzi will retire.

Oh yeah, it is true. Read back to comment #108, I did check on Kirsten Fox’s website and looked few pictures of tourist and deaf group with Kirsten Fox did the same of Sunset Cruise Agency with Terzino Bomprezzi. I know some deaf people who were crusing with me under deaf travel agents in several years ago. Kirsten Fox STOLE Deaf travel agent’s customer to buy Kirsten Fox growing her business. Kirsten Fox destroy Deaf travel business. As far as I know it now had two hearing travel agents expect their business growing faster through deaf customers. I do not understand why deaf people kept on purchase through hearing travel agency. I suspected that deaf customer do not trust to do with Deaf travel Agent, because deaf travel agent do not know how to do processing and service, but not true. Prefer hearing travel agent but Deaf travel agent CAN do. It had been my pleasure dealing with Deaf travel Agents and took care of business in nice manner. I felt comfortable calling deaf travel agent by VP than hearing travel agent through interpreter. VP is useful.

Remember this important one, PLEASE do not purchase Kirsten Fox, because I am disgusted that Kirsten Fox copied Mr. Bomprezzi’s idea “I LOVE YOU” ice craving on ship. I can not wait to see ILY ice craving if Mr. Bomprezzi will do it again for his sailing.

KEEP deaf Travel agent up on business. Deaf travel agent are my permanent cruise agent. Worth to be with Deaf Travel Agent on sailing. THUMB UP!!!

For anyone signed or deposited with DeafCruise.com is going to be surprised or shocked with the price changes. Originally, interior cabin, was $899.00 – now it goes up to $1547.00. Other categories are also gone up! Taxes, insurance, and tips not yet included.

I checked with NCL online. The itinerary is not the same as the agency shows. The agency also started off with July 26, now it is July 25.

It was not cruise line’s decision to increase. It was the agency’s false advertisement to begin with. Bottom line, WOULD YOU TRUST THEM?

I think its time for people to stop making fun of people with disabilities of any kind.

It just shows how stupid they are.

As a person who is labeled Bipolar, I think I can understand how crude and hurtful jokes like that can be.

I have met deaf people who are smart and beautiful and 10X the person that the crude folks telling the tasteless jokes are.

  154. February 16, 2008 at 11:24 pm | #154

I don’t think you should condemn all people who are hearing (or vice versa). I learned ASL from the Lexington School for the Deaf about 22 years ago. I took classes where no one was allowed to speak. We never knew if the teachers were Deaf or not. I learned it because my son has Down syndrome and it was decided he would learn it AND I am a disability advocate and wanted to know this language for my community. Now 22 years later I am nearly deaf and am so glad I learned ASL.

I have been in situations where people have told me my ASL or my Spanish is wrong ( I learned Spanish while living in Mexico and Peru.) It is frustrating because not being native to either language I simply have to agree. I have gone back to check to find out if I was in fact wrong and found out I was not.

I do not think it is right to use people without disabilities or who are not Deaf in film to portray people who are. But unless and until people with disabilities and who are Deaf demand differently it will continue to happen.

This travel business situation sounds like bad travel agents. I don’t think it is a hearing vs Deaf issue – I think it is a bad travel agent issue. I do think people should support the businesses created by people who have disabilities or are Dead, but I also think they need to support our allies. Sometimes it is hard to determine who anally is, but that is where being a close-knit community should help.

Being Deaf doesn’t automatically make you better. If you had to choose between a bad Deaf business and a good hearing one (that was Deaf friendly) which would you choose?

  155. Answer for Susan
    February 17, 2008 at 1:24 am | #155

Back to comment #154 last question – look, there are other good deaf agents w/ license as recommended (see top left) – to support them therefore I would not pick deaf friendly agents b/c they have more advantage – able to speak/negotiable and smart to pull deaf tourists to them to make a lot of money and made freedom of sea as largest recorded – is this fair to good hard working deaf agents trying to accomplish? Choose hearing agent or a loyal deaf person saying hearing agent (like PDT) is better than them can hurt their feeling and hurt their business. Want deaf children to look up to deaf agents/business (ask for license/photo to prove first or check w/ other deaf experienced tourists) as role model and learn that they can do it in the future, not follow hearing agents that can do better than deaf agents – no role model for them.

  156. Deaf Rights!
    February 17, 2008 at 3:06 am | #156

Hi to you all. I was watching TV about true story movie “The Rosa Parks Story” – the black lady who refused to give up her bus seat to white man and ingored bus driver demanding her to move out (no other seat left for colored people). Her history won, got their right to be equal to white today – both together now. But Deaf and disabilities are still behind – still struggle and frustrute. Hearing people still push them out (not providing interpreter and reasonable accommodation, using hearing ASL instructors vice Deaf, etc…) and also try to change Deaf people/children to be like hearing (remove ASL, force to use CI, learn speech, etc…) Hearing like CI doctors, hearing travel agents, etc…. become rich by using them. Time to stop and fight for our rights to be equal to hearing people. I’m tired of being on knee doing for hearing people, suffering like how Rosa Parker felt, obeying white people. Need ALL Deaf people to become unity and fight to treat us equally to hearing people with respect. My body is getting old and I hope I’ll see Deaf and disabilities to get full rights/ be treated full equally exactly like history of white/black people to become equally some day. Use Deaf travel agents so hearing people at the crusies can see that we Deaf people with interpreters can do without depending on hearing agents! Show them that we Deaf people with interpreters can communicate to work out with hearing cruise companies. We need to submit to add new law/policy requiring to use Deaf qualified ASL Instructors and Deaf actors/actresses for Deaf role in TV/Movie.

Back to Comment #172 New York Ladies,

You are 100% correct about Keith Wann and also including John Maurcer’s show! (Repeat, same old/bored thing – I had see him and his group at deaf school few years ago).

I had few cruise trips with small deaf group and interpreters (by Terizo and others) before Deaf Freedom of Sea. We enjoyed hearing shows with interpreters signing to match their voice/music tones – they were very awesome – many different fast acting, changing shows (ppl, dances/clothes/background stage & lights, etc…) 100% better than keith Wann and John Maucrcer’s shows. Other shows using hearing comedy persons (with interpreters sitting with them) had best funny jokes to make us laugh hard and hearing tourists loved to watch interpreters – signing funnier than hearing comedy persons, trying to learn/copy signs and tried to communicate with us next day – cool! This helped/educated hearing people to learn and understand about Deaf/culture and respected us a lot. Many hearing tourists spoke to interpreters that they learned a lot about us deaf tourists and enjoyed seeing us – we can do anything like hearing. I don’t know why Mac/Tab dumped all hearing shows and let John M. handled all – should be balance – deaf and hearing shows for first time tourists to get idea the difference between them and enjoy both. We are NOT going to Mac/Tab’s next deaf cruise – disappointed and are going to use other deaf agent’s trips!

  176. February 25, 2008 at 9:39 am | #176

I’m not young anymore. I talk, read lips and sign ASL just fine. I went to public schools when there were no CC, no interpreters and no mainstreamed classes. I went to GSD for four years. I took speedreading course, modeling school ( modeled locally ) and Auther Murray Ballroom Dancing School. I went to a summer workshop at NTD. I audited and got role of Sarah Normans of “Children of a lesser god” at Springer Opera Theatre in Columbus, Georgia 1984. My parents and half brother all hearing. No one signed. I married three hearing men. No signing. My two kids are hearing. They fingerspell. Where I live, it’s couple hours away from deaf communities. I worked as book keeper and accountant for my parents’ successful construction company for twenty years. After my parents died, half brother who was 9 years older than me, hated me because I remind him of his hated stepfather ( my real father still married to my mother ). My father was late deafened. My mother was a strong pro active Deaf Rights Activist. Everybody didn’t want to make her mad because she had money. Everybody thought my father will die first but she died first unexpectedly. Half brother and relatives ( a cousin is a lawyer ) became greedy and took advantage of Hearing Lawyers and Hearing Judges being incompetent about Audism and Deaf Rights. I cannot get a job. It took me almost 14 years to keep everyone, including last hearing husband from destroying my credibility as a capable independent educated woman. One of us Deaf people are going to have to become as famous as Elvis Presley or Beatles or Britney Spears to get noticed by Hearing people AND DEAF PEOPLE,TOO, to become acquainted with AUDISM, DISCRIMINATION, DEAF RIGHTS ABUSES, etc. All the well publicized DEAF actresses/actors including Heather who was Miss America in the past are HARD OF HEARING who can talk like Hearing People are conservative and non-committed to abolishing Hearing Structured Politics of Deafness. Economics are designed by Hearing Engineers who do not think about Deaf People’s roles ends up economically and politically repressive for Deaf People who can not get up enough money to organize like Hearing mentally challenged people’s rich parents raised plenty of money to produce fancy special olympics and numerous organizations and plenty of advertisements in a lot of magazines. Mentally Challenged are handicapped but they are “HEARING” therefore they got more power than Deaf non mentally challenged people do.

So we, FB editors, want to let you know that we decide to close this thread and there will be no longer to post the comments anymore.
