Richard Roehm hates Deaf jokes?

January 28, 2008

Richard Roehm wrote: “The joke is very poor taste if you want use something to make the deaf community look coexistable with hearing neighbors.

We use two way pagers and personal communicators to find out which house is the deafie’s. Why send a backward message with the car horn? Lets use the sidekicks and 2way pagers.

The car horn is not exactly something your neighbors want your deaf friend’s to be using to find your home. ”

Here’s his video:

The joke is a poor choice to be using to promote an ultra fragile deaf community. Theres other jokes that are better.

In old days, Deaf people didn’t have a pager. Not all deaf people have a pager.

I applaud Pepsi for promoting deaf culture in a clever, incisive manner that will raise much awareness for the much-lauded hearing-impaired and hard-of-hearing culture. Why are we being so negative and focusing on specifics, when we should be celebrating this milestone?

Richard, you should feel blessed to have a pager, not all people who need one can count on one. Let’s not take things for granted, folks.

    Best,
    Sergio

This would have been a better joke to use as it emphasizes the need for communications assistance.

Yea, I agree w Sergio. I don’t have a sk for myself. I know many deafs couldn’t afford to pay monthly. Others broke sks/pagers and couldn’t afford to buy another for a while. In the past, we asked some deafs to leave the front door light on so we could find them at nite. I love that Pepsi commerical joke. We have so many deaf jokes, too.

  6. Uncaring Nesmuth-Roehm?
    January 28, 2008 at 9:33 am

Assumed that the Nesmuth-Roehm do NOT even care for Deaf people who cannot afford to buy pager or not care for Deaf people who forgot to bring pager? Is that what Roehm likes to bash the Pepsi down to make us, the Deaf more suffer?

Well, some people don’t find it funny.

I, myself, know this joke is way outdated but it is funny. To see it evolved to a film is a joy to see that Deaf jokes is being shared worldwide. This joke is within our Deaf community, I first heard this joke when I went to NTID in 1982. Every year I keep seeing this joke being told over and over again, still I chuckle on how people translate that joke or changing version… up to now I probably have had saw 50+ version of this joke.

Yes, we live in a world where we have almost complete access using pagers and cell phones. I guess now we all can say that this joke is outdated.

Does this prevent us from re-telling it to others? No. This is what makes this Deaf humor fun is to see it being told over and over again.

As for Richard, well, if he fails to see it and want to make it more realistic, that’s his problem. Why do you let him ruffle your feathers? He is who he is. Let him be. I haven’t seen his video (I have no intention to let him ruin my appreciation for this upcoming commercial and that is MY choice).

Just giving my 2 cents here. Have a great day.

I envy all of you folks in America who DO have a SK or Blackberry or even an old fashioned TTY,, cos in Holland we do not have those sorts of things,, oh sure they are availbable, but they are EXTREMELLY COSTLY to own and to get service/ie monthly payments for the gadgets,,I am happy with my little cell phone that has pre paid calls on them so I can text my partner.

Richard are u hearing??? or late deafened ??? Did you not “hear” the joke before ?? I “heard” the joke when I was in residental school, so the joke is quite old and a classic.

I also applaud Pepsi for having the courage to plug the advetisement during Super Bowl,, and I say WELL DONE,,

  9. January 28, 2008 at 9:44 am

Hey Richard, you think wrong because I don’t have a pager or TTY. What/how do you think how you possible contact?

  10. Fred
    January 28, 2008 at 9:48 am

It’s amazing how someone would not be able to catch the humor of this commercial. I agree with many of you about having our cultural aspect being shared worldwide. I applaud to Pepsi and another organization for the launching of this.
For those of you who felt different like this guy, Richard… should refrain from trying to counter attack the concept, I don’t see how you have your current job? This is ridiculius, misconception on his part. And I agree with Boston, I also have no intention to open any of his vlogs it’s a waste of my time, but this time was curious, aghhh… so I too gave my two cents.

Roehm, the Nesmuth, should have gone help the Tmobile or any Pager to sell their own Superbowl Ads for more empowering Deaf Marketing??? Is Nesmuth busy bashing the Deaf Pepsi Fans down?

It doesn’t surprise me that Richard Roehm seized another opportunity to take some pot shots on Deaf Community. Hey, Richard, not everybody have a pager or a cellphone. I don’t.

But what you missed is that this ad is a Deaf Culture joke, as part of its folklore.

    Richard,

It’s not matter of fiances or not. I don’t want a cellphone nor a pager because I don’t need it, not because I cannot afford one. Please don’t assume the only reason people don’t have them is cuz they are broke!!

Richard lost his sense of humour or losing his mind …. why bother that Richard is working at OCDA ( Orange County Deaf Adocacy ) but still oppress deaf culture such as hate ASL, dont like Deaf jokes, Think deaf communities can try to speak and not using sign language , mixed up information .. sometime his brain have wrong wires or wrong brain that need to be fix or transplant new brain.. that Richard dont deserve to work at OCDA .. i think it is time for deaf community to face and challenge richard to court becasue he destroy and oppress deaf people as long as Richard working in OCDA…. have two faces … friendly person in office work but outside of office.. bad guy like as mr.grumpy or mr.confused person.. oh well about Pepsi commerical is darn funny .. that is good idea to gain more media and more deaf actors/actress to be recoginzable for deaf role models.. no more fake deaf acting such as movie called Calendar Girl, Bionic woman ( new series) and other tv shows or movies… anyway you all have a good day and enjoy Super Bowl.. time for me to buy more pepsi bottles before Super Bowl but make sure to sit near bathroom when need ( just kidding )

I never said I dont have a pager or sidekick. I see the deaf community really is drowned in the sensationalism. I’m not going to explain it out for you. Maybe we’ll wait till the UPS lawyers explain it out to you for me.

Ummm, maybe Richard doesn’t have good sense of humor. How sad.

    Hey Richard,
U need to understand that every year, Super Bowl ads always show humor and funny with hearing actors/actresses in it. Not that serious, just jokes…same with deaf actors in new Super Bowl ad. Just once for Super Bowl tv…not everyday. Got it, Richard? U need to take sense of humor medicine so u will enjoy deaf actors in Pepsi Co ads.

Bury ur bitterness in the grave pls, Richard. This is 2008.

    January 28, 2008 at 12:27 pm

I agree with these comments about Richard having no sense of humor. He sounds that he puts us deafs down. Pepsi wants to share that old funny joke with hearing world. Laughter is the BEST medicine!

We are aware that T-Mobile won’t approve many of us deafs when we’d buy sks/pagers cuz of bad credit history so we are stuck with the Internet on cpu to communicate with other deafs who have SKs. Once we went to the Deaf Expo in St. Paul, MN and we tried to buy a sk. We were told to wait till we’d be approved or not. One hour later we went back to the booth. We were approved. I could see alot of applications that were marked “Declined”.

Hey Richard, you HAVE to understand that many of us couldn’t afford to buy SKs. In some states, they won’t give us free sks. If they’d give us a free sk, T-Mobile might not approve us so we’d be stuck with sk and sell it through eBay or any friend who could buy it from us. We’d go through GoAmerica that we’d have to pay more higher each month that they take money out of your acct. directly.

Richard, you look about over 50 years old?? Remember how you felt like suffering without sks, cpus, TTYs when you were a kid? You had to ask your mom/dad or brother/sister to make calls for you??? My old dates gave notes to my sister to give me and let me know when I’d see these guys for dates. I had to drive tooo far and see deafs, but they were not home! Now I have 2 deaf adult children. They are so lucky to have everything. They could communicate and won’t have to drive too far and find friends not home. DUH! Remember your old times!

PepsiCo, I am your big fan! I love drinking Pepsi. Coke hurts my tummy if I’d drink too much. Smile. Gave 2 cents!

Hmmm… what a sore loser you are!

    Deaf Michigander

  37. January 28, 2008 at 1:13 pm

To Fookem and Bug and everyone else except Richard,

I am writing to you all except to Richard because it is not worth addressing to RR’s thick skull. Based on my observation and from a source who knows him, it is unfortunate that he is exhibiting an asperger’s syndrome that he does not have the ability to distinguish between reality and a joke.

    See website: http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:xOHU79EDHF0J:www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/karen_williams_guidelines.html+asperger+syndrome+ability+to+understand+jokes%3F&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us&client=firefox-a

“Children with AS show an inability to understand complex rules of social interaction; are naive; are extremely egocentric; may not like physical contact; talk at people instead of to them; do not understand jokes, irony or metaphors; use monotone or stilted, unnatural tone of voice; use inappropriate gaze and body language; are insensitive and lack tact; misinterpret social cues; cannot judge “social distance;” exhibit poor ability to initiate and sustain conversation; have well-developed speech but poor communication; and usually have a desire to be part of the social world.”

So my recommendation is to just leave RR alone since he can’t help it. The best way is to just ignore and continue to focus on the positives of the SB joke just like Amy Cohen Efron had commented.

    Cheers,

    Barb DiGi

    Deaf Michanger,

Ss I said before, someone who knows him in person told me that so it adds up. If you analyze the symptoms, it certainly matches up. This person who told me happens to be a professional in diagnosing personalities.

  41. January 28, 2008 at 2:09 pm

When Richard posts his comments (either good or bad) and video in the public, he welcomes anyone to read his opinions. It doesn’t mean that we hassle him. We Hear all, See all, Know all, and Share all. -Bug

Very low and very lame! I don’t care if this person is well liked or not. No one has the authority to diagnose anyone online. Even getting information from a third party is just as lame. What goes around, comes around. Shame on you guys for doing this.

Hey C…just relax.. I am not making any diagnosis since there is no way one can make such conclusion by online. I am just sharing my OBSERVATION not diagnosis (this is where you got it wrong) and I am just sharing what I have learned from someone who is in the profession of diagnosing who SUSPECTS that he has AS, not necessarily that she made a diagnosis of RR. Get it?

    Folks,

Why bother bring this up? Let me tell you a way to get rid of Richard Rohem (Nesmuth) is not to talk about him, nor view his blog/vlog. As long as you take a moment to make comments to him or about him, he wins the game. He is getting the attention and that is something you folks need to understand his game. Don’t fall for the trap.

I see the whole thing as deficit thinking.

    Barb —

C is right at this point.

We have no right to depend on the third party to make the observation.

Unless the psychologist or counselor can diagnose on the patient whether he has an asperger’s syndrome or not.

Counselors and psychologists are supposed to keep their confidential as their professions, however, the third party who possibly is a psychologist, also in a profession, is not appropriate.

  53. January 28, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Everyone has the right to their own opinions and observations while I agree that no one should be making a diagnosis online. Hope that helps to clarify my message.

  54. January 28, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Thank you RR for responding. Now we know he has it so that is what I am trying to say..LEAVE HIM ALONE!

  55. Diane
    January 28, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Richard – It is an old Deaf Culture joke and I love it …. Ah no wonder you probably have an Asperger syndrome. Only if your doctor confirms this. But that’s explained anyway. I will try to respect who you are. I have a strong sense that you have an illness or disability.. I really don’t think you tend to insult everyone on your purpose because your way of thinking is pretty distorted and his poor social skill. Thanks

    Happy Deaf Joke!

  59. January 28, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Whoa, Barb. You’re going over the line here.

I don’t like Richard Roehm just as much as the next person here, but it is unethical to label people like that. There is a difference between sharing an opinion and putting a physical/mental disorder label on someone.

Only professionals can do that, and a true professional wouldn’t go around in public saying that Roehm has such and such syndrome.

It’s saddening to me that it seems to be those who are involved with DBC are unethically labeling others, like John Egbert claiming that Paotie’s sociopathic, and now you labeling Richard Roehm as having Aspergner’s.

I would be very careful, Barb. If this kind of conduct continues, someone’s bound to get into very hot water.

  60. January 28, 2008 at 9:28 pm

Whoa DP, I am not representing DBC by making these comments. This is me as an individual and DBC has nothing to do with this topic, ok? It is not fair for you to drag DBC into this and use this as an advantage to bullet me down. You can either agree or disagree with me fine but don’t go around telling that I should just not express my opinion just because I am part of the DBC.

By the way, how is it different for you to label these parents as worse parents of the year and support the idea that Susanna is a CI militant? So who is being unethical here? It is easy to preach than to practice, huh?

Some people just don’t get it. If one represented an company or an organization, that person’s reputation is ALWAYS on the line everywhere he/she goes. We’ll see who’s gonna learn the hard way.

  65. January 28, 2008 at 11:34 pm

Just adding my perspective here: No one can verify Richard Roehm’s true identity here so #56 may be wrong after all.
Anyone can masquerade IP address so it’s pointless.
Richard is has a history of problems dating way back before vlog was born so nothing will change him.
And for those of you who are not revealing yourselves such as C, whiteghost, deafpundit, etc: you don’t stand up for yourselves and be counted as real people. Instead, you choose to be a coward and bash on others to their disadvantage. Shame on you!
As for C: start practicing what you preach because you have lowered your standard!

  66. January 28, 2008 at 11:51 pm

Response to C: #64 comment you made about representing company or organization – just as long as it is work hour. That person can make personal comment on anything but it looks like you are not getting it.
FYI – BarbDiGi has far more credibility than yours so don’t EVEN try smearing her reputation!

  69. John
    January 29, 2008 at 12:18 am

You know what is so funny? Richard Roehm is hated by many in the Deaf community so I do not know why people feel it is worth their time to mention him, then dive into responding to comments. If you think it is worth your time, that’s your business.

I don’t know RR personally so I can’t vouch for him. But by me commenting I am using the precious time I have left in my life to jump into the boat to make my point. And I don’t know why, except for sheer curiosity and feeling amazed people spend so much time over one person. At least everyone has their point made, and I guess RR, whether he has Aspergers, or not, is clamoring to have more of us.

I really feel that Richard Roehm, if he feels he is a leader, needs to become more invisible on the vlog front, and more visible on the Deaf services front. I feel all Deaf services leaders should refrain from vlogging because it can be a negative for the Deaf services center, especially if the responses are negative, and RR is a perfect example of that. As a community leader, RR should be loved by everyone.

That is what we want in a leader, right?

As a favor to him and to myself, I am not going to entangle myself into anymore RR discussions. It’s not worth my time, or my two cents. I rather use my time for something else that is worth every minute I breathe. I am NOT going to breathe “Richard, Richard.” He is not worth my time, I don’t have anything to prove for him.

He is accountable for himself. If you want to spend the next two minutes God has given you to live, do something else instead of entertaining him, or provoking him.

Ask yourselves: Is he worth your two minutes? What if you only had two minutes left to live?

I think at this point it will never be resolved long as you don’t open your mind to another perspective. It’s like fighting a losing battle in Middle East. Need not to go there. Case closed!

SO funny that you’re promoting your blog… on Richard Rohem!

do you feel maybe a little better now that you’ve vented your *asfjas;lfjas;lfis;idofjsfjas;oifjas;fij* ?

  75. January 29, 2008 at 6:07 am

Barb, you need to understand that you are using psychological and psychiatric labels, which is drastically different than calling someone an asshole, militant, or whatnot.

Only a professional in that field can label someone else with those psychiatric labels.

I suggest you consult with an attorney to verify what I said.

    Have a nice day, folks.

    Deaf Punsit,

Go to hospital NOW and leave deaf alone. Stop attack attack attack good deaf like Barb- Barb herself very popular in U.S., while many deaf don’t know who you are. But Michigan know who you are- you stab Ryan Commerson back when he want Mich school improve education. You email people talk bad about ryan and against bi-bi education, make parents not agree ryan’s stand-up for rights. You hurt deaf children in Mich why they not get good education why you make people not support ryan.

Again, you skill pull deaf down, not help deaf community never. You not help deaf community- go to hospital!

WE have different kinds of deaf people,

Most want to help Deaf community

But few, noisiest, negative attitudes are like Deaf Punshit, Mike Mcconnel, C, White Ghost, Rehom, Paotie, They enjoy pull down Deaf people.

Just ignore them, delete their comments on your post, simple

Deaf Pundit was actually trying to protect Barb from being sued for slander. We don’t know if Richard has that psychiatric condition or not, but if he doesn’t, he can sue Barb for slander. None of us wants to see that, right?

Barb has a good point, though. We need to leave Richard alone. I agree as any attention we give Ricard actually reinforces his behavior.

I agree with Deaf Pundit on number 59. I laughed that it was perfectly all right for the deaf to label JF with all ugly names from the book that she lost her job and the others also.
BEWARE, Barb and the others who think they have the right to label others they do not like.
Pepsi joke is funny but this may give people an idea how bothering the Deaf people can be sometimes.

    January 29, 2008 at 11:31 am

I am sure Barb will appreciate if someone will suggest she is ………………………………………………… (you can name her anything you want positive or negative) what goes around will come back to her no matter how popular or unpopular she may be.

Karma will come back to bite… she should have never even started this silly hoopla of suggesting something she may not know anything about.

I still say Richard to lighten up but … in to try to be destructive to his reputation … that s another story .. so much for DEAFHOOD .. eh

  87. Mishkazena
    January 29, 2008 at 11:52 am

Richard Roehm already got a very bad reputation, all by his own doing. Many people don’t understand why he is so negative about Deaf Community, so I can understand the anger of Deaf people toward him.

Barb was trying to help defuse the situation by explaining to people so they can leave Richard alone.

  88. Another thought
    January 29, 2008 at 12:01 pm

Good job for Barb trying to defuse by labeling him. She only added more fuel to the fire …

I say Barb needs to get off her high horse.. no need to continue to throw stones at one who may be already self destructive (if that s the case or not)..

No wonder … thousands of hearing parents do not want their Deaf child associated with DBC .. Karma ia b..i..t..c..h .. they say …

It is not about right or wrong things to do. Also, it’s not about having pager or not. It is a JOKE! That’s whole point of JOKE. Whenever, you like it or not.

  90. Judge
    January 29, 2008 at 12:08 pm

Jenny, Barb should not judge the others and she is not entitled to make an opinion but the rest of you can? Barb is human like all of you.

All she is trying to present a theory why RR is that way and she emphasized you to just ignore him; instead you making a mountain of a molehill.

By the way Deaf Pundit, you got it all wrong, it is not slander, it is libel. I don’t think you know what you are talking about. Libel also includes all kinds of written statements made against the person that leads to damaging his or her reputation. RR’s reputation is already damaged by many others if you looked up in the past year. There are comments far off worse than what Barb said if you check out the deafvideo.tv where one video commenter said that he wanted to break his neck. Ouch!

RR presented in public himself so he is responsible for his behavior, in other words, asking for it. The public is entitled to make its own opinion even it includes insulting remarks toward a person especially that this person made himself public.

When you look up at the website:http://injury-law.freeadvice.com/libel_and_slander/insults_epithets.htm

“Usually they are seen as outbursts of emotion, with no real substance, except to show intense dislike. Defamation has to harm you in some lasting and concrete way to be the basis of a lawsuit.”

What Deaf Pundit did by calling worse parents of the year or a CI militant is no different than suggesting someone with a disorder. (please note the word suggesting not diagnosing)

Barb is not a psychologist or a counselor, therefore, she cannot make a diagnosis because she doesn’t have a license. She wrote clearly that she is not making a diagnosis but an observation. Let’s say if she is licensed, then we can cry defamation but in this case, it is not applicable.

But again, I hope that this is the last time we ever have to talk about RR or attack anyone else because it is a waste of time.

Case closed! (banging with the gavel)

Some of you took Barb the wrong way including you Another Thought. I would suggest you to think harder.

I see your motive now because of her involvement in DBC. So you are just taking the opportunity to bash DBC, good try!

I have got news for you, DBC is growing and growing more everyday. For you to claim about thousands of hearing parents not wanting to associate to DBC is FALSE! You are no better making libel remarks here. And WTF about Karma? You are speaking for yourself!

Whoa ….. 91 … before you start spewing … you do not know anything about me, my beliefs, and so forth.

Barb is well known for DBC especially with her daughter s situation. I do not know anything more about her except for that.

I am DEAF, strong believer in ASL is = English. I am for all Deaf and hearing babies to learn ASL .. Bilingual is the way to go..

Yet at the same time, it certainly does not give anyone a right to make a suggestion ahem … assumption to why a person may be self destructive due to a possible label.

Barb made her bed with DBC by promoting her own daughter s situation which she is famous for now. This is all I know about Barb and the recent posting above .. what am I to think of her other than DBC .. so .. she made her bed now she must lay in it with DBC .. its all out there .. only she created this for herself …

I have never met her and I am sure she s a fine person with great qualities .. yet to come on here and
    make suggestions to labeling others..

one have to think about how she ll label others .. There are many Deaf cildren who have Asperger s Syndrome I just hope hearing parents with newborn and Deaf babies take this whole hoopla with a grain of salt..

Anyone want Pepsi … smiling ..

  95. A Proud DBC supporter
    January 29, 2008 at 12:59 pm

That’s what I mean..you are taking her in a wrong way. She is not being negative but suggesting one of the possibilities why RR is not perceiving this as a joke. Asperger’s is not necessarily a bad thing though besides she is entitled to her opinion like anyone else.

You got it all upside down about Barb. She did not promote her own daughter, no way! It is the situation that was caused by this Marriot manager who demonstrated aggressive behavior toward Barb and her daughter. It is just an unfortunate situation that they were in not that they deliberately promote themselves.

I am just getting out of here since you are being way off the track of the topic of this post.

    Hey ladies and gentleman,

If people cannot afford pagers because of their poor credit, get a f–king job! Work at Mcdonalds or whatnot. It looks bad on deaf trying to get freebies and mooching the government taxes. Richard has been getting SSDI but he can drive and talk or able to distribute information on the net. It looks bad on DEAF. Makes me wonder where the freakin time he has to publish it.

Pepsi has done great! Great Joke! It does educate hearing people about deaf. There’s no pity. Corporations will understand deaf culture and hopefully to promote them. We have to show who we are that we can do anything except to hear.

Comon…get real with your lives and this is 2008! There’s a Deaf Porn online now, deafbunny.com and there’s a new deaf TV show coming. Deaf culture is working hard.

    Hello everyone!
So much dramatic here… I want to clarify up about between Richard, Barb Digi, and many others…

Use your brain, Richard is good at getting public attention which we all already know about that. I want to thank Barb Digi for clear up about Richard has Asperser Syndrome which that is an explain…

Now, I know that people who have Asperser Syndrome shouldn’t GET AWAY with it even if they cannot help with it. What Richard AS HUMAN has caused the problem. Richard obviously KNEW he will have consequences by Deaf community.

I respect Barb Digi’s view on this issue about to leave him alone. I totally understand her view and there are some of messes that Richard has made because he cannot help. It doesn’t mean he has rights to run his mouth around this place to piss off others and they should leave RR alone? I believe that people DESERVED to give a positive or negative respond/answer to Richard and he has to learn deal with the facts.

My respond to Richard- ” Asperser Syndrome doesn’t make us stop from you PERIOD “

Deaf Pundit, ahem, you didn’t have to include the DBC dig so that makes you no better. I’m curious, did you have something to do with supplying the hotel staff in VA with all the names, etc. of the participants for DBC demonstration? Put a lot of people and children at risk I’d say. Again, it’s only spectulation. The same for Barb. Barb only said, “exhibiting..” aka ‘looks like’. It is not conclusive until RR said so himself since he voluntarily shared the information himself. The premise of her post is that for us to ignore him and I agree.

Be honest with you……if Richard has asperger’s syndrome, it won’t be possible for him to be ”acting lawyer” or advocate because he must know how to judge in his power…..but he did sucessing helping to raise funds, educating the communities about deaf rights…… so he did fine. Richard has good communication skill with his sharp mind. So I think those people don’t get it. I bet that Richard is laughing at them and collect info about them.
