Do you believe in signing Santa Claus?

December 14, 2007

By Bug

Look at Deaf children smiling at Santa Claus in this video. Here is the proof: He knows our American Sign Language. Do you believe in Santa Claus? It’s an age-old question, which has become intertwined with the spirit of giving, with the magic of Christmas, and a wish to have one time of the year when truly anything is possible. Seeing is believing. Enjoy this video.

Forgot to add one more name ~ Mike Harper (now Gally student).

Curious where did you get this videoclip? You got permission from those people in that videoclip? Parents of the children? I’m wondering because I do have some videoclips to share, but I think I need to ask others for their permission. I don’t want to make anyone else upset especially without their knowledge that it’s up on the Deafread forever..

    Thanks, Kim

youtube, once they post on web, basically you can link to it and not need much permission, as long people dont claim as it own.

BUt you bring a valid point, children in the video, i will assume thats something the people who filmed it in the first place may have signed waivers, or expectations to be filmed, and all that.

brings another point – but I ll refrain.

Kim, We posted it with link because this video is open to the public. You posted their real names, did you ask for their permission? Happy Holidays to you. – Bug

I remember when my son who is now ummmm in his 30’s, was 6 years old. He was born deaf and never got to talk to a Santa without me as an interperter. Then Sears brought in a signing Santa. Of course then there was a sales reason it was the very first “Closed Caption unit” up for sale. Sears set the TV with the unit right next to Santa. They hooked me how could a Mom say no to a son that was so excited to see that the pictures on TV actually had something to say. BUT this Santa you show is so awesome, I never will stop sheading a tear of joy when a deaf or H.H. child get to part take in something that a hearing child takes for granted! Merry Christmas!!!

Bug – you’re right! I was too excited to see those familar faces, and published their names. It’s truly awesome to see them on the Deafread.com. I pray that they’ll be OK and forgive me. Merry Christmas!!

Still am curious how you got the videoclip? Is it from TV news? Thanks

For one year I was a “signing santa” at a large local mall. The joys of seeing the deaf children ask for what they want, was incredible. Then a HEARING mother complained that my voice was too high. Yes, I am a female but to those deaf children I was the only signing santa around. In the costume, you were unable to tell that I was a female. Then the photo company asked me to step down because the HEARING mother complained. Although, the photo company heard complaints from deaf parents They never asked me to come back again.
(Santa’s do not work for the local mall;) they work for the photo company. ..Human

Where’s the captioning? The audio story is very sweet, but the article with the video only tells a little of the story.
