ASL student rode with Deaf ghost

A young man who took ASL class at community college in Hawaii. He decided to stay after class and to work on his ASL until 9:45pm. He walked alone at the campus until he reached his car in the dark parking lot. He drove along the dark strtch of the road leading to Hilo town on the Big Island of Hawaii. As he passed Laupahoehoe he saw a figure in the distance that appears to be hitchiking along the side of the deserted highway.

Getting close by the figure he realized that it was a woman dressed entirely in black. She wore a long hooded coat and long black gloves. Feeling she was in distress, he pulled over and offered her a ride. She accepted.

The dark of the night sky didn’t enable the young ASL signer to get a close look at her but trusting that she was harmless, he continued along. She was very silent. He spoke to her but no response from her. He turned his light on to see her face. He noticed her left skull was big than right side. He started feeling funny about her. His fear grew and grew until she looked at his face. She signed ” Ok? (meaning are you ok?)” He signed back ” I did not know you are Deaf. Why is your left skull big ?”  She signed ” My father was ashame of me because I born deaf. He hit my head with his shovel and hoped I would hear better but I died.”  She closed her eyes.

Deciding she had probably fallen asleep, curiousity overwhelms him and he wanted to catch a glimpse of the quiet stranger. Not wanting to take his eyes off the road for too long, he cautiouly leans forward and was unprepared for what he found: nothing but darkness peering out from behind her hooded cloak.

Beginning to worry and unsure of what is taking place, he glanced down at the rest of her and ralized she didn’t have any feet.

He braked hard as his panic grew. He yanked the vehicle ovber and rushed off to find a pay phone.  Unpon returning to his car, he found her crying. She signed ” my father hates me very much because I am deaf. please tell him to stop force me to hear and talk.” He signed back ” who is your father?” She stared at him for two minutes …she fingerspelled ….” A-l-e-x-a-n-d-e-r -G-r-a-h-a-m- B-e-l-l “  He stepped backward and fell into the ditch. He got up fast and saw her floating out of his car. Then he fainted.
