UWI to offer degrees in sign language

June 18, 2007

A diploma/degree programme in sign language is to be introduced at the Univesity of the West Indies.

Its main aim is to improve communication between the hearing impaired and the rest of the community, Social Development Minister Anthony Roberts has said.

He did not say how soon it will be introduced but said the university had been asked to develop the programme.

Roberts said too a dictionary of signs commonly used as well as signs unique to Trinidad and Tobago and American sign language was nearing completion.

He also said steps were being taken to redesign public places to make them more comfortable for the disabled.

Modification of entrances and rest-room facilities, provision of documents in Braille and sensitisation training for interacting and communicating with people with disabilities would be undertaken, he said.

Roberts said that schools would be re-designed and altered to accommodate pupils with disabilities and services and facilities would be expanded to include special schools and vocational training centres for people with disabilities.

Speaking at the recent annual general meeting of the National Centre for Persons with Disabilities at City Hall auditorium, Harris Promenade, San Fernando Roberts said that more than $35 million was paid to non-governmental organisations that provided programmes and services to people with disabilities.

In the areas of prevention and rehabilitation, he said that 214 primary school pupils suffering with hearing impairment were sent for further medical care while 16 visibly impaired children received eye glasses during the first four months of the year.
