(CBS4) KEY LARGO A pregnant bottlenose dolphin apparently did not want to be released from a Florida Keys rehabilitation center because she is deaf.

Dolphins need their hearing to navigate with sound. Having little or no sense of smell, these dolphins make up for it with a sharp sense of hearing.

The 10-foot long dolphin, named Castaway, received a full examination last Friday morning including blood tests and ultrasournd, said Robert Lingenfesler, president of the Marine Mammal Conservancy in Key Largo.

“Her health is good and her calf seems good as well,” Lingenfelser said. “The plan is to get her ready for release, before she has the calf.”

The dolphin originally stranded off Vero Beach, Fla., in early November, but was deemed healthy enough for release a week ago, after convalescing at Mote Marine in Sarasota, Fla. But instead of swimming offshore, she returned to the beach three times and was transported to the Keys.
