The Seven Black Presidents Before Barack Obama

Were There Black US Presidents before? The people thought that Barack Obama is the first black President of the United States. Wrong.

1. John Hanson (a Moor) was actually the 1st President of the United States, he served from 1781 – 1782 and he was black. The new country was actually formed on March 1, 1781 with the adoption of The Articles of Confederation. This document was actually proposed on June 11, 1776, but not agreed upon by Congress until November 15, 1777. Maryland refused to sign this document until Virginia and New York ceded their western lands (Maryland was afraid that these states would gain too much power in the new government from such large amounts of land).

Once the signing took place in 1781, a President was needed to run the country. John Hanson was chosen unanimously by Congress (which included George Washington). In fact, all the other potential candidates refused to run against him, as he was a major player in the revolution and an extremely influential member of Congress.

As President, Hanson ordered all foreign troops off American soil, as well as removal of all foreign flags. He established the Great Seal of the United States, which all Presidents since have been required to use on all Official Documents. He declared that the 4th Thursday of every November to be Thanksgiving Day, which is still true today. Even though elected, one variable that was never thought through was that America was not going to accept a Black President during the heart of the enslavement period. Enter George Washington.

2. Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President of the United States, he served from 1801 – 1809 and he was black. His mother a half-breed Indian squaw and his father a mulatto (half white and half black) from Virginia. He fathered numerous children with Sally Hemmings, a mulatto slave with whom he lived with in Europe.

3. Andrew Jackson was the 7th President of the United States. He served from 1829 – 1837 and he was black. His mother was a white woman from Ireland who had Andrew Jackson with a black man. His father’s other children (Andrew Jackson’s stepbrother) was sold into slavery.

4. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, he served from 1861 – 1865 and he was black. His mother was from an Ethiopian Tribe and his father was an African American. It was told that his father was Thomas Lincoln, a man to cover the truth, but he was sterile from childhood mumps and was later castrated, making it impossible for him to have been his father. Lincoln’s nickname “Abraham Africa-nus the First.”

5. Warren Harding was the 28th President of the United States, he served from 1921 – 1923 and he was black. Harding never denied his ancestry. When Republican leaders called on Harding to deny his “Negro” history, he said, “How should I know whether or not one of my ancestors might have jumped the fence?”

6. Calvin Coolidge was the 29th President of the United States, he served from 1923 – 1929 and he was black. He proudly admitted that his mother was dark but claimed it was because of a mixed Indian ancestry. His mother’s maiden name was “Moor.” In Europe the name “Moor” was given to all Black people just as in America the name “Negro” was used.

7. Dwight E. Eisenhower was the 33rd President of the United States, he served from 1953 – 1961 and he was black. His mother, Ida Elizabeth Stover Eisenhower, an anti-war advocate, was half black.

So, America has survived and thrived through our first Seven Black Presidents and we will survive and THRIVE through the election of this one!

    I have contacted SNOPES( since loads of people have sent me the same info ),, and I am trying to find out where it says all of this, not saying it isn’t true , so I will reserve my comments until I actually know this is the “real deal “.

    BTW Obama is of mixed blood, so he is not TOTALLY BLACK.

    Fookem, there’s no proof that Andrew Jackson’s father was a black man. His father, also named Andrew Jackson, came from Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Ireland with his wife and two sons. He died before the birth of Andrew Jackson, the future US President.

    Does this photo of a very old Andrew Jackson resembled of a man of mixed complexion like Obama? No.

    Keep in mind that in AJ’s time, he had political and personal enemies who spread lies and false rumors about Jackson’s origin and upbringing just to keep people from supporting and voting for him.

    Under the Hill, President Andrew Jackson was the son of an Irish woman who married a black man. He was such a high percentage black that his oldest brother, according to articles and books, was sold into slavery. If there is no proof, can you explain why was his brother a slave?     Fookem, please answer my question: does Andrew Jackson, being the son of a supposedly black man and a white woman, would have the same skin complexion as Obama?

    Also, Andrew Jackson’s facial characteristics possessed none of noticeably African negroid facial characteristics. A close-up look of the photo of the aged AJ with his hair having bore no resemblance to the hair of Don King or any of negroid hair feature (which usually shortish curly overall).

    You offers no substantial proof to back up the claim that Andrew Jackson was the son of a black man, other than a dubious claim from the Virginia Magazine of History and from an African-American historian, A. J. Rogers, who’d first proposed it in his book, The Five Black American Presidents.

    There’s Andrew Jackson’s Family Bible from the New York Times Archives showing the article from March 19, 1882. Be sure to read carefully.

    AJ’s father died when the younger AJ was almost two and his mother moved to an area between North and South Carolina, where there were a large number of Irish immigrants and Negro slaves living at the time. In 1788, he’d purchased his African-American slave woman for the first time, then purchasing and owning several more African-American slaves (about 150 in all) in the later years, hardly the kind of background of him being the son of a negroid slave.

    Under the Hill, In your first message you mentioned that his father died before Andrew Jackson was born. Now you said he died when Andrew was almost 2 year old. You are not going to be accused of errors because the researchers often see the mixed up facts just like what you did. It’s a huge challenge, isn’t it?

    So many historians, researchers, archaeologists, scientist, etc often disagree with each others. Because at the level of primary research and evidence, historians often find different evidence on the same subject. In some areas of historical inquiry new information causes new conclusions to be drawn and that evidence as well as those conclusions is then contested.

    In my opinion, it doesn’t matter if Andrew Jackson was supposed to have same skin complexion as Obama if he were Black. Obama’s facial characteristics are not Caucasian race but his biological mother and grandparents (on mother’s side) were white. Some Blacks say Obama isn’t “black enough”.

    What’s about Michael Jackson? Look at how he is now thought to be white just because he has light skin caused by vitiligo.

    Many Whites with their Indian blood don’t often look like Native Americans. Thomas Jefferson did not look like Native Americans or Black, he was a son of a half-breed Indian squaw and a Virginia mulatto father. Thomas looked like white like Andrew.

    Also, Lee Thomas the well known Black anchor/entertainment reporter became white. He has a bad case of vitiligo, which is a skin disorder that destroys your pigment, turning it white.     I’ve heard people saying that Jesus was Black. The FACT is – whether Jesus was black or not is VERY arguable.

    The New York Times article about Andrew Jackson is very interesting, thank you for the link. Many people don’t always understand the genealogy of past Kings, Queens, U.S. Presidents, etc. I would say that race and ethnicity are two different terms that confuse many people.

    Race is more likely a socially constructed category, historical meanings assign biological differences between groups that are distinguished by phenotypical traits.

    Ethnicity is more often related to cultural features like language and traditions.

    What it made Black Historian A.J. Rogers find out and believe that Andrew Jackson was a Black U.S. President? That would be interesting to find a key for the truth.

    Bug, regardless of what you’re saying, Andrew Jackson’s father was still an Irish immigrant named Andrew Jackson. I checked out two recently published, well-received books at a local Barnes and Noble store: “American Lion” by Jon Meacham and “Andrew Jackson: His Life and Time” by H.W. Brands. Both authors did not point out anything that A. J. Rogers had put forth the proposal that AJ was the son of a black man. I’m sure they would have known about A J Rogers’ book, given their access to wide-ranging materials on AJ never seen before in public.

    I’d only pointed out the New York Times 1882 article about AJ’s father died before AJ was two. That’s just one part of many good sources about Andrew Jackson worth noting, nothing more. AJ’s father did died before AJ was born but the Andrew Jackson’s Family Bible provided a curious different clue to the timing of the death of AJ the elder before AJ the younger turns two.

    The only way to prove Rogers’ proposal is DNA genetic testing, there are Jackson descendants coming from AJ’s older brothers and an exhumation of the grave where AJ is buried may be required to extract DNA samples.

    Before I got home from work, I happened to stop by Barnes and Noble Bookstore to see if anything that I might be interested. I did not think about Andrew Jackson until I saw “American Lion” book. I almost wanted to buy it but I did not bring enough money. I think “American Lion” is a good book to read so I am thinking about buying it after holidays.

    Black historians, however, were not the first to write about the five presidents’ racially mixed families. White historians and political opponents also wrote about the men’s black ancestors, but the books were either destroyed, went out of print or are hard to find.

    A common theme associated with the earlier black presidents is that they all passed for white, sometimes destroying family photographs and letters, to hide their racial backgrounds.

    Sen. Obama cannot obviously pass for white because of his dark skin color. Obama makes it clear he is the son of a Kenyan economist and white female anthropologist.

    Interracial relationships between black women and white men explain the racial backgrounds of some of the presidents, but not all.

    Sexual relationships between black men and white women have produced offspring. Andrew Jackson, the nation’s seventh’s president, was the son of a black man and an Irish woman, according to historians.

    Interracial relationships between black men and Native American women also produced racially mixed offspring.

    Rodgers, who died in 1966, wrote the book The Five Black Presidents, and Dr. Vaughn devotes a chapter to the five black presidents in his Black People and Their Place in World History. Rogers and Vaughn agree Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, Harding and Coolidge had black ancestors.

    I disagree with you on Andrew Jackson, he is not black, he is half native american and white. As you know at first native american love andrew Jackson because he is half native american and help them alot during war then Senators and Congress pressure him to sing Indian Remove Act of 1838 (I think). All native american never forgave Andrew Jackson. As of today Native american people never touch 20 dollars bill because Andrew jackson’s face on 20 dollar bill.
    Oh by the way, Obama is not black, he is half half. But he chose black cultures so he is consider himself black.

    well.what will people think of next?? to me it dosen’t make any difference what the color of skin is..or who fathered who?? it does matter if the man elected president, be true to this country and his vows as president.. respectful, and most of all have insight into the vast problems we face today..not a singlr one of us had any say as to who our parents would be..only god knows that, therefore if we are all created equal,, then it should remain that way, color really is no problem..pjg

    Thomas Jefferson was impeached because he was lonely when his wife, Martha passed away. Of course he was love the black woman, Sally Hemming’s 6 great great children did interviewed with Oprah few years ago and I watched Oprah and very interesting one of Jefferson’s (5)great grandson who lives in Redmonds, Washington. he say He accepted the way acenstory of his great grandfather who made mistaken. But Sally’s childrens from that time Jefferson admitted he have two children was came from Jefferson’s brother was also involved. It is not clearly I have to looking to find a website later.

    I love Jeffereson’s background with Sally Hemming. his background really hit me hard and understood the plantation he put Sally for slave. I can understand his white children doesn’t along with Sally’s second son who is part of Martha’s children are not connected anymore .. Afterward,they were freedom later after Abraham Linclon finally freedom later on.
    They called them salt and pepper.

    Anyone one ever wonders where the “Ike” in President Eisenhower’s name springs from? That name is West African (Nigeria specifically) in origin. The full expression is Ikechukwu or ikenna( God’s Power). Somebody telling me that his mum, whose first name(Ida) is actually a corruption of the name “Ada” (meaning “First daughter” in Igbo language) acknowledges nothing about her possible African ancestry?
    For the records, the Igbo or Ibo tribe is supposedly one of the missing tribes of Isreal that settled in Southern Nigeria centuries ago.And by the way, “Ibo” is alleged to be a corruption of the word “Hebrew”.

    I have not recieved enough evidence on either front to determine whether seven of our U.S. presidents were black or mixed, but I know one thing. The equally racist white and black populations have used black parents as an excuse to label people.
    All black Americans are mixed. Slaves masters raped or just had sex with slaves.

    Thank you all for a great topic and a very interesting read. To me it is of no relevance as to which president was or is black or not. I just hope the trends of the past are not continued today. I refer to the blatant abuse of power and excess spending that we allow our government to pass before us. We sit at home or on the computer, complacent; filling our “leaders” pockets with the money we earn, having no choice in this matter. At what point will we stand up and take our nation back. When will the power return to the hands of the people. Are you aware that you have to pay taxes on your previous years tax return if your a homeowner in Virginia? Don’t things like this upset you. Doesnt it upset you when you find out that our leaders are trying to pass “stimulus packages” that set aside billions of dollars for Hollywood Producers and cutting 100 billion dollars to education and special needs eduction for children? Please just think about the position we have put ourselves in as a nation.

    Who are the Negro People?

    As the new U.S President B. Obama touts about being the embodiment of the late DR. Martin Luther King dream for America, I can‘t help but wonder, who are the people DR. King is talking about when he speaks of the Negro People? Who are the Negro people?

    Has anyone taken the time to read and comprehend Dr. Martin Luther Kings I HAVE A DREAM speech, if they did they will notice there is no mention of African people, African struggle, African Americans.

    I Have a Dream states “One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.”

    He only mentions the condition of the Negro people in their homeland of America and their relationship with the new nation of the United States. At some point in time a person reading this speech should want to clarify, “Who are the Negro People- the blacks as they are identified?” To answer these questions one needs to identify some facts.

    What does the term Negro signify? The term Negro people signify the Indigenous American people or Amerindians the colonial term used to represent them is Negro The Negro American race or black Americans represent the continuation of the remaining natural linage and bloodlines of the indigenous American People belonging the land of America before European invasion born from American Indian women. The founding father of the U.S established a new form of society on American soil. In this new society American Indian women and her descendants are used to SERVE as human commodity (slaves) people living in freedom(without their natural rights to self determination) but not being free (collective self determination) in the United States. Negro people represent the descendants from American Indian women or enslaved American Indians of America.

    He continues and speaks about the full citizenship promised by the U.S to all Negro people in their homeland, and reveals the fact the U.S has not kept its promise; he states the Negro People have received a “Bad Check”.

    “It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds”

    What is the deal the United States made with the Negro leadership for the Negro people 1868. The U.S. promised “Citizenship” to the Negro people? If a person would do their research, they would find that the 1868 treaty with Abe Lincoln established the Union of the American Indian people as Negros with the United States and the continent of land belonging to the American Indian people was put in a land trust to be governed by the United States in exchange for American Indian people born from American Indian women were to receive full citizenship meaning the same rights as the people who enslaved them and self determination to develop themselves under this new nation umbrella.

    Understanding past U.S history explains why Dr. King ‘s dream of seeing an integrated society’s Negro and Euro-American people working as equals in this nation? The big secret is – The Negro People are the people who are allowing the Nation to exist, without their land there is no Nation, with out there peace there is “no prosperity of this Nation” He also threatened the Negro race of people will not rest until they have justice. In other words “NO Justice, NO Peace” All black American people can attest we are not treated equal nor are we treated equally or regarded as citizens,. In 2009 our people still languish on the out skirts of Euro-American society and the Marjory are captured and living in Prisons, our children live in extreme poverty, we lack collective employment as a nation we are on the brink of extinction. The difference today is Negro people as black American for generations have been forced and influence to assimilate into European attitudes and culture they have lost their connection to their ancestral American Indian culture and connection to their Natural homeland. As a result they lack respect, dignity, hope or direction.

    Now that some facts have been revealed, the question to ponder is how did the new elected African president become the ideal of DR. Martin Luther King and the Negro People? Or better yet Why is President Barack Obama a European and African decent immigrant being used to personify the dream of Martin Luther King for the Negro people in the Negro Homeland instead of a Negro president for the country that has yet to give them a GOOD check, Wouldn’t a Negro president show the world, the dream of Martin Luther King has for his people finally came to pass? The answer is President B. Obama does not represent Dr. King’s dream he had for the Negro People. President, B Obama represents a distortion of the Dream, and the Negro people are being Con out of their pants again by the Euro- American (U.S) society and (U.S) media at large.

    So exactly what is the semantics around Barack Obama? A European and African decent immigrant who is now a Negro Person, or are Negro people becoming Africa immigrants to their homeland thru identifying themselves with Barack Obama. Is there a national identity switch going on? Are the Negro people being duped out of the dept the United States owes them, the one DR. Martin Luther King spoke about? Are today’s Negro people being setup to be permmentily homeless people, with no place to be fruitful and multiply on the planet? If Negro or black American people become immigrants don’t they lose all there human and inalienable rights to live in the U.S, and lose their civil privileges by becoming immigrants to there homeland through identifying President Barack Obama as one of them? Yet he is a Kenyan African not an American Negro? Will this enable the U.S to destroy the dream of Martin Luther King and remove any claim the Negro people have in the Negro Homeland?

    LET’S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT
    As a result, Negro people are being bamboozled again with a new perception that racism has stop in America against them, when in fact the systematic extermination of Negro people are filling up the jails and the graves, the only difference now is that they have a man named Barack Obama to cover over the crimes being committed against them and keep the people invisible and confused. It is a fact most black/Negro people lack education in their heritage, history, and most Negro women have been educated to have little respect for understanding their collective purpose as creators of the race and the sacred Grace we hold- it is woman that nature in trusts to continue their humanity as a valuable part of nature to the planet If they did they would not say they are black and they would understand B Obama is not the first Negro president and recognize and respect Michelle Obama is the first Negro woman in the White house and stand proud because her presence in the White House is a huge strike against the stigma from colonialism of Negro women as inferior woman, while our people understand that the struggle of equality represented by a Negro Man as president has yet to come part of Dr. Kings dream has started but yet to be completely fulfilled. It is up to us not to lose site of who we are and represent, our struggle is not over. It is time to recognize your indigenous identity.

    I have seen comments disputing the race of these presidents due to the texture of their hair, the complexion of their skin and if they do or do not resemble President Obama. Some of you wonder if a person is mixed, or half and half as some of you said, are they black? Who determined the ratio of what it takes to constitute a person as being considered black, look that up, it is out there and the dumbest crap ever to be perpetuated. I personally know people who are of black and white parents and you can not tell that they have any african american in them at all and vice versa. Then another person wrote several paragraphs explaining Dr. King’s speech, how do you know what he meant or whom he was talking about? Speculation, has always kept this country in darkness, does it matter? Dr. King’s speech can apply to many people whom are being oppressed and their civil rights are being denied. If you fit the bill then he was talking about your ass. What I have learned in my life being around (white) american’s and (black) american’s is we treat oppression like a sport, who is on the best team. None of us are evolved enough to participate in this sort of conversation, or to discuss if these facts are true or not intelligently. You wouldn’t except facts about a persons genealogy if the father and mother showed you the egg and sperm that created that person who later was president of this country if it proved he was in deed of african decent, you are not ready to accept that. However, there will come a time when we will accept each other as human beings and these debates and need to identify with the best team will cease. We will stop this foolishness. As I read through some of the comments I am embarrassed for you because you actually don’t know how ignorant you sound. If these men are of african descendents good it makes history more interesting. It proves that people of any culture and/or race can contribute to society. What is sad is these men lived in a world where they felt they had to hide the truth and deny who they are. Unbelievable!     I have heard about the 7 BLACK presidents before Mr. President Obama, how ever I like many of you who read this ask the same question: where is the proof? I would love to have something to reference wwhen doing my own research of this topic. In the end why does it even matter really? I feel that if President Obama or anyone else with bi-racial ancestry wanted to claim african american so be it. It is 2010, and we still harbor the same hate, ignorance and violence towards each other. Race still defines how you are treated in this country, all the comments stated here are trying to prove these alleged 7 Black Presidents did not exsist….Race should be the last thing we focus on..their is REAL

    Very interesting thread. I too must do some research before I will believe anything on the internet. However, to those who say race of the President does not matter; you must be white. To those of you saying Obama is half and half; you must be white. I find it interesting that when a person of African lineage does something wonderful (Obama/Tiger/Halle) white American is quick to point out that they are “halfhalf.” Remember, it was you who said we were Black if we had 1/5th African Blood in us, but when it suits you you change the rules; you become color blind. Well, I don’t want to be color blind…I have a 7 year old and she will know that this President is African American. She will be proud of him and his accomplishments. Why don’t you do DNA tests on all the criminals you throw in prison to see if they are half and half…claim them also.

    I wish race did not matter. But, I live in the real world.

    Anybody who would actually believe that Jefferson had a white mother and a black father, or that his half brother came from a white mother and was “sold” into slavery is sadly ignorant of history of racism and sexism, or the social norms of the time.
    Everyone had black half siblings, because it was totally acceptable for men to get children on their slave women. Usually the woman and her children would never be sold out of the family – and girl children would usually be given to daughters of the family upon their marriage. These mulatto children would be slaves as would their children no matter what color their skin was, unless they could run away and pass as white.
    What was not acceptable was a white woman being with a black man, the black man would be beaten if not outright killed, and the woman would be sent away, the children sold or given up for adoption, if she were married her husband could divorce her while keeping her dowery, and she would be in disgrace for the rest of her life.
    Given that we know Peter Jefferson’s family tree, and that he is of either Irish or Welsh decent and we know that Martha Jefferson was related to the Randolph family of Virginia, it was extremely unlikely that her family would have allowed her to bare a black man’s child and help that child pass, or that her husband would have allowed a coocoo in the nest. (And Jefferson’s father did not die before he was born, or before he was 2 — the man lived long enough to father 7 more children after Thomas)
    It is know though that Sally Henning, was Jefferson’s wife’s half sister, from her father and one of her mother’s inherited slaves (who may actually have been the child of Martha’s maternal grandfather) and that there was at least one half brother who was a slave. But these were children of her father, not of her mother.

    I agree with the research about these former president’s being black or having a parent with black or mulatto blood. There is one thing that we know for a fact and that is NO ONE is a pure race, and we all have different races of blood flowing through our veins whether we want to believe it or admit it. So the question remains why can’t the research be true? Why isn’t it possible for these presidents to have black blood in? The answer is, that it is very possible, and probably very true that they are black and it doesn’t matter from who the black blood come from. I think everybody should research their family roots, and I guarantee you that if you go back far enough you WILL find a ancestor that has a different race of blood than what you initially thought and some people don’t have to go back that far. It is just ignorant for anybody to believe that their race is pure I believe the research is true and it is just another controversal topic that was just covered up, and it would not be the first.

    I wonder, if the research is true and I do believe that it is, how will the people feel who don’t want to face reality that these presidents are black? Will you continue to deny the truth and continue to say there is no proof and it is not accurate? Well let me just say this I’m a white person and I think that for years white people has felt superior over black people, because there were no black presidents, supposedly all white. Does this research intimidate white people just the fact that this research could possible be true. It doesn’t initmidate me at all, I actually am not surprised at all, and I think if he just keep living there is alot of different things concerning white and black that will eventually surface.     Racism is not about superiority but jealousy & cowardice. You don’t need a law to prevent the inferior from reading. You would not need to cover your face with others and gang up on & one inferior person. You would not lay out in the sun all day to look like an inferior race. I grew up knowing of my native heritage but was never allowed to participate with a tribe because I am a black. Well, ddep in my heart and soul I knew there was something that my mother was suppressing about her true ancestry and may she rest in peace. I promised my mom that I would remain assertive,resilient and proud of our heritage. Recently, I had a MtDNA test done with my results being in Haplogroup H and my subclade is Haplogroup10 which is common in East Asia, including Mongolia, where it makes up over half of the population. Admixture estimates are consistent with a substantial contribution from Mongolia. My ancestry is Finnish, Russian, and Yoruba. My Haplogroup H10 is found in in Chuvush, Russia, Kazakhstan, I am a Turk and have many northern mtDNA matches with the people of Northern Finland, Norway, and in Western Europe, Germany, England, British Isles, Portugal, northern Italy, Austiaand Poland. I am indigenous to the admixtures of European Asians, so I am eurasian and America is my birthplace and not one racist tribe would accept my membership because I am black to them. Well, my great grandfather was Bennett Jackson that is linking to Andrew Jackson. He is listed as mulatto and black in the Sampson County, N.C. census, but all the Bennett Jacksons in the local communities the other are white. I have taken the mtDNA and still no membership, but net I am a Turk and indigenous to the siberian people of Russi and Saami People of Finland and Norway. Oh, I need to mention that most of all my ancestors migrated from the Wisconsin, Minnesota, Utah, North and South Dokata areas. I am now participating in the National Geographic Project tracing the ancestral migration of humans.

    My 2 great nephew and great niece are “Black” one of the boys looks Hispanic and the other looks like the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson His father is of Black Nova Scotian (Canadian) origin and his mother is of Samoan heritage he. The girl is the only one who has any Black look of the three. I was talking with the middle one and he is telling me that a lot of TexMex people try to talk to him in Spanish. He tells them he is black. I asked what made him Black not white? He told me what ever the fathers race was that is how he was classified. His dad is “black” so that is it. I am godfather to all of them.

    So that would make Obama black. This last census had “Negro” as one of the race check boxes.

    Sigh! As someone who teaches Dynamics of Oppression, it is sobering to realize that there are still Terry Gabrich’s in this world and others who are simply convinced that their racist inclinations are absolutely justified. At least there also are the Third Eyes, Sherry’s, Gale Torregrossa’s and other human beings who are not stuck up with racial hatred but have risen above that narrow mindedness. I am however impressed that the debate rages on even among deaf people. Now that DNA has all but offered us indisputable scientific proof that the origins of humanity is the womb of an AFRICAN woman, why do we worry about race when ALL of us regardless of how human migrations to diverse geographical locations changed our melatonin and other features, come from that original DNA?
    That is hard. We have too much fear and a desperate need to rationalize that fear so we seek enemies among those we see as different. We then desperately want to project ourselves as above “them” – superior to “them”. We just fail to realize that this is just a myth and intended to give us a false sense of superiority. Just read Terry Gabrich and it is very easy to understand why many of my white friends dismiss his views as rubbish and representative of a paranoid racist fringe. However, I would like to argue that people like Gabrich actually believe that they are right and that they have justifiable reasons to believe in the inferiority of those who are NOT white. At the same time, they do not provide logical arguments to support their false sense of superiority. Are white people inherently superior to non white people? Not at all. People of color usually know more about white folks than white folks know about people of color. Why? Because colonization requires the colonized to acquire the knowledge, language and skills of the colonizer. So somebody like me, from South Africa, raised in the rural grasslands of KwaZulu and the slums of Clermont Township was able to learn and master the master’s language, history, customs and skills. The master however, remained mostly ignorant of my language, culture and skills. I think for us deaf folks, this is all too familiar in our struggle against audism. Anyway, I am enjoying this thread.

    The entire discussion is pointless and moot. What difference does their race make? That line of reasoning is as racist and bigoted as profiling. It is moot because these men are dead, and so they are not here to defend themselves. If Barry Obama can identify himself as black, then doesn’t it stand to reason that all men can do likewise. It seems that the motivation here is to justify a person’s ability to lead, and it is a ridiculous arguement. Leaders are shaped by conditions, opportunity, and some personal fortitude.     I know this is a few years late, however, I need to correct you about John Hanson. The Hanson you speak of was never president. President John Hanson was most definitely a white man. Many will start off the claim with the black John Hanson by showing his photograph. That is Big Clue #1 as cameras were not even invented in the 1700s. The photograph IS of a John Hanson….Senator John Hanson of Liberia. He was part of the group of blacks that were sent back to Africa and helped developed the new country of Liberia. He was senator of that country in the 1850s…..when daguerrotype photography existed for that photo. The Library of Congress gets this question quite often and sent me a host of links of information, however, I had found the Liberian senate one already on my own. Now we can go down to the beginning of time like Anonymous did, but that starts to grasp at straws as any African blood was basically gone even by the 1700s.

    Anyway, this also debunks the rumor that John Hanson (the black one) is on the back of the $2 bill in a group shot since he was never a part of our government.

    As for the others, I think more research aside from the fact that some were victims of political smear campaigns is due. Lincoln may also have been actually from Melungeon descent. I would suggest you research the Melungeons – people of Turkish and Portugese descent that resided in the Kentucky/Tennesee area in that era.

    I find it interesting that we ave been listening to American History for so long without proper validation, but when the truth is being told, all of a sudden, people want to know ‘who says so, etc.’ The lies and cover ups that all of our children have been and still are being told have no validation; just the word of Historians. But if a Black or Native person re-tells history, then validation is in order!

    Further for those who are banking on what these Presidents look like, good luck! The sun does not always show on the faces of those who have Black blood.Don’t look at the hair or cheekbones of a Native American to find a teepee in their tree. Google Greg Williams a professor at Ohio State who wrote “Life on The Colorline.” Look hard, you won’t see his Black Father in his face either; but his father ‘Tony was a Black man passing at one time as a Greek man from Munchie Indiana.

    For the one who believes that Jefferson was only White & Native American, think again and get the facts straight. Even though these things were hidden, the information highway is pregnant with facts that just would not keep quiet.

    Lastly, it used to be if you had one drop of Black blood you were Black, and that was a bad thing. Now, if you have one drop it’s a good thing…..well what about DNA? Whatever was in your kitchen when that salad was made, that the kind of salad it is…good or bad. Obama is what he is White and Black and for those who believe they are only…….be careful you may never know what’s in your tree until the knock on your door, or you need a transfusion. You do acknowldge that caucasians evolved from africans, which is the reason you are in existence, so what is all the hoopla about who is black and who isn’t. Your surname Ponce isn’t exactly Anglo? You need to reference the article that made the font page about Warren Harding. His mother was a woman of color that he met in secret. Many people in North Carolina and in particular the Manuels/Emanuel started out as admixtures of black and whites people of color that were granted their freedom in Virginia and migrated to North Carolina. They marrried other admixtures, africans and europeans. Many adopted the european customs and continued to intermarry with whites and natives for the 200 years and to this day will deny that they are the descendants of freed slaves and free people of color. They actually took on the identity of native americans and refuse any DNA testing. Today, they are demanding that the federal government recognize them as natives and give them federal funding. If, this country would base ethnicity on DNA testing many people would be in awe and startled with denial for fear of social acceptance. I know for a fact that I belong to a European Haplogroup but my physical characteristics places me in another group because of how I look. Of course, this doesn’t bother me, but what amazes me is that I know others that identify as white that do not belong to haplogroup H and is too often subjective and judgemental based on skin color and cosmetics. My maternal lineage are the Quakers(Pennsylvania), Pilgrims (Massachusetts, Rhode Island), Canadians, Finnish-Saami and Russian-Mongolian. So am I to deny my caucasian relatives? If so, then I would not exist, either. People that think like you are afraid of the truth, and the truth is that we have more in common with each other than differ with each other.

Further more the person that you are refering to has the exact same name as the President of the Articles of Confederation. At that time there was no America. A confederation is a loose association of independent states. First check out a website with some evidence

Many people in North Carolina and in particular the Manuels/Emanuel started out as admixtures of black and whites people of color that were granted their freedom in Virginia and migrated to North Carolina. They marrried other admixtures, africans and europeans. Many adopted the european customs and continued to intermarry with whites and natives for the 200 years and to this day will deny that they are the descendants of freed slaves and free people of color. They actually took on the identity of native americans and refuse any DNA testing. Today, they are demanding that the federal government recognize them as natives and give them federal funding. If, this country would base ethnicity on DNA testing many people would be in awe and startled with denial for fear of social acceptance. I know for a fact that I belong to a European Haplogroup but my physical characteristics places me in another group because of how I look. Of course, this doesn’t bother me, but what amazes me is that I know others that identify as white that do not belong to haplogroup H and is too often subjective and judgemental based on skin color and cosmetics. My maternal lineage are the Quakers(Pennsylvania), Pilgrims (Massachusetts, Rhode Island), Canadians, Finnish-Saami and Russian-Mongolian. So am I to deny my caucasian relatives? If so, then I would not exist, either. People that think like you are afraid of the truth, and the truth is that we have more in common with each other than differ with each other.

    It’s amazing how so much information has been omitted from our history books. I noticed that no one challenged the validity of any of the information when I was in School and college. Quite a lot of people feel somewhat uneasy with the possibility or the fact that they have Black blood flowing thru their veins. By the world’s standards, it’s not popular being Black. People have hid that ethnic origins if they could live their lives as White, European, etc however, not Black. I have a rude awakening for you if you believe in the teachings of our holy bible. If all mankind are descendants of Adam and Eve, we are All related. God bless you.

    This comment is for DaniiPonce, Our President Obama deserves respect just as the other presidents. You said, “he was the worst president”…. well no one top that score of being the worst but George W. Bush!!!! Now that was the horse that led America to the well and dumped us in. President Obama has to pick America out of the mess Bush and others got us into. Why the world is putting the blame on our President who happens to have compassion enough to fill those used dirty shoes other presidents wore and man up to help the poor and he chooses walk a different path to get the job done which is almost next to impossible to fix. We are a nation of people that needs to stop talking enough to hear and see the truth about this country! America needs to take a look at this country of ours and ask God to forgive us. We need to think…..! Those without sin or blemish cast the first stone!     As simple as this. There is no such thing as a Monolithic Race. We are all mixed of different nationalities or creeds. From Pangea to now, life has adapted to many forms and shapes. Just because one is Indian or not, does not mean that they are still not black. Slavery was infested from shore to shore, Mexico to Brazil, Europe to U.S. All who were mixed at one point in time to now. To clear this up at the same time, being black does not mean the darker the skin tone. Black is a color of many shades, skin tone, and pigmentation, hence, (ALBINISM). To settle it as clear as day, the tone of your skin, does not define who you are. If you purely think that you are only one race, creed, or nationality, then you are as lost as anyone else. As much migration that has occurred throughout life’s history, it is absolutely mind boggling that people tend to forget that Nomadic individuals obtain who they were by their name alone, (nomadic). Stop the debate and read a book.

    This is no news to the African-American community.
    I learned about this through my wife-to-be who herself is black
    and me being of European origin I only knew the official historical version.
    I think the US would benefit greatly from having this out in the open.
    I would give a far better image of the counties history then the one we have today.
