“Mrs. Katherine Krueger (Detroit) BORN TOTALLY DEAF can understand phone conversations perfectly by holding the receiver to her chest.” (RIPLEY INTERNATIONAL LIMITED, 1939)
I wonder how can she understand the phone conversations perfectly after all she does not hear or know the exactly words? Anyway, I tested it myself to see if I understand it. Well, it does not work for me, but you? Who knows? Maybe the old fashioned phone is better than the modern phone?
My brother Fookem and I went to the cemetery site in Hillside, IL to pay our respect of our Deaf grandparents. We found other fascinating fact in the cemetery site where our Deaf grandparents were buried.
I am a huge Cubs fan! My brother Fookem and I went to Chicago today and visit the Wrigley Field, the home of Chicago Cubs and the 2nd oldest ballpark in the America. I live in a high-rise condo in Chicago and my location is about 15 blocks away from the Wrigley Field. Of course, I went to few Cubs games!
Smile… Yes. Maybe some of you know that the late Princess Diana’s father-in-law, Prince Philip was the son of Princess Alice and Prince Andrew of Greece. Prince Philip’s mother, Princess Alice was 100% Deaf.
When I was Editor of THE GREEK DEAF COMMUNICATOR, I did a write up on Princess Alice of Greece in 1993. A librarian from the Mahoning County Library found books about Princess Alice and I took interest in doing her story. IMAGINE…. The DEAF Community of Athens, Greece NEVER knew that Princess Alice was DEAF! They went crazy when the word got into other Greek communities where Greek Deaf individuals lived.
I wrote to Prince Philip and sent a copy of the article about his Deaf mother 14 years ago. Guess what?? I got a letter from Buckingham Palace. Just ONE statement from his secretary: “Thanks for the trouble in writing.” That was it. Prince Philip did not sign his name. Just his secretary.
Prince Philip who is married to Queen Elizabeth of England never told the Princess Diana. She took pride in helping Deaf people in England and was interested in learning their sign language. I am sure that Princess Diana learned about her Deaf Grandmother in law. This probably helped her got interested in working with the British Deaf. Prince Philip’s mother died about 6 or 7 years ago. [Hats off to Irene T.]

Alice: Princess Andrew of Greece
Hugh Vickers
Princess Alice, mother of Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh, was born profoundly deaf at Windsor Castle in the presence of her great grandmother Queen Victoria. She grew to become one of Europe’s loveliest princesses who spent her early married life, from 1903, in the turbulent political arena of Greece. She was the most mysterious princess of the 20th century and led a most extraordinary life, yet her story is little known. Princess Alice spent her final years in Britain and died at Buckingham Palace. Her story is now told by one of Britain’s foremost biographers. Paperback 352 pages 2001
A new PBS show, “A Chance to Read,” highlights new strategies that special education teachers across the country are using to help students find success.
With a provocative premise that claims society “assumes” children with disabilities can’t learn to read well, the program explores a revolutionary program for deaf and hard of hearing students in Burnsville , Minnesota , that combines cued English with American Sign Language that’s finding surprising success.
In the program, Georgetown University neuroscientist Dr. Daniel Koo cites statistics showing that the average student who is deaf graduates from high school today with a third- to fourth-grade reading level.
“A Chance to Read” also profiles an innovative literacy program for students who have cognitive disabilities; highlights the importance – and difficulty – of learning Braille; follows an unusual program for students who are “twice-exceptional”; and features emerging assistive technologies.
Hosted by actress Molly Ringwald, who grew up reading to her jazz musician father, who is blind, “A Chance to Read” will air on public television stations this fall (check local listings). For more information about the show, or to watch it online, please click here.
Vince Young, now a Titan, was one in 2005, too, for the Longhorns, who sorely miss his type of leadership.
The race to determine the Big 12’s most valuable player begins Saturday, when Texas Tech and Oklahoma State compete in the first conference game of the 2007 season.
But the quest to identify the league’s most inspirational player is over. The runaway winner is Oklahoma State cornerback Martel Van Zant, who has been deaf since birth. [read more...]

Hello, I have another story to share with you. That incident, one Saturday night, before dinner time, you know a long time ago we had a big machine TTY which called MONSTER with coupler. The coupler means the phone on the TTY. Anyway, I happen to gather with my family and see the phone ringing with light flasher. We look at each other and wonder who calls here. I come to TTY and answer it. Nobody answers, I see the red light on the TTY machine like beep, beep. It means hearing person speaks. The hearing person is idiot so I hang up. About three minutes later, the phone rings again. The red light on TTY still BEEP BEEP again. The hearing person still speaks again. But three minutes later, the phone rings again. My second son, Fookem, he comes and says, ‘I will scream on the phone’. He picks up the phone and SCREAM then hang up. All of my family laugh at him. He is funny. Farout. Three minutes later, the phone rings again so Fookem says, ‘I have an idea and I run upstairs and bring the gun’. You know a long time ago, the gun has red caps with blank bullet which is for kids to play. Anyway, he put it in his gun and start to bang bang bang bang bang on the phone. I feel that people on the phone hear so loud. WHOA WHOA, we laugh. He hangs up. He says he is filled up with these stupid hearing people. I say yes, right. Three minutes later, the phone rings again so my wife put the phone on the TTY and type. The red light beep beep so she decides to pick up the phone and speak. She explains to them that we are deaf family and can’t hear you what you say. But she will get her neighbor to answer the phone to see what you have to say. HOLD. All of us are in hurry and run to our neighbor. We say to our neighbor, we are sorry to bother you but people bother us and try to call us. Don’t you mind to answer the phone? And why did they try to call and bother us? The woman says, sure, and walk with us. She listens to the phone and speak, yes, right. It is Lomanto. She says yes, oh I see and tell us that your christmas picture is ready to be picked up. We look at each other with disbelief looks. We say at each other, who will go to the store? We look at each other again and don’t want to be embarass when confront them. You know the hearing people will think that the deaf person is idiot. But end up, I go to the store. The people look down at me and wonder. Nice picture and thanks, I say. I pick it up and zoom.
But sentence suspended for obstructing legal process
Doug Bahl a well known advocate in the Twin Cities deaf community talked about his recent experience in the Ramsey County Jail where he alleges he wasn’t given access to a TTY phone or interpreter while in custody as required by law. He spoke at the office of Legal Aid in Minneapolis Friday afternoon Dec. 8, 2006 and is being represented by attorney Rick Macpherson in part of the proceedings. (Staff)
A deaf St. Paul College instructor who fought with police during a traffic stop has been convicted of misdemeanor obstructing legal process.
Douglas Duane Bahl, a longtime deaf activist, has argued he acted in self-defense when an officer, unable to communicate with him, got rough after pulling him over for allegedly running a red light Nov. 17. Prosecutors argued Bahl was combative and resisted arrest. [read more...]
