Atlanta Falcons Picked Glenn Anderson’s Son, Jamaal

Posted by Fookem and Bug on April 29, 2007

Looking for help at defensive end, the Atlanta Falcons selected Jamaal Anderson of Arkansas with the eighth pick in Saturday’s NFL draft.

It was the first pick for the Falcons under new coach Bobby Petrino, who opted to pass on 19-year-old defensive tackle Amobi Okoye whom he coached at Louisville.

The Falcons had a more pressing need at end after losing veteran Patrick Kerney, who signed as a free agent with Seattle. At the other end, the Falcons employ the oft-injured John Abraham.

The 6-5, 288-pound Anderson, who declared for the draft after his junior season, recorded 13 1/2 sacks in his final collegiate campaign.

Anderson was the second defensive end picked after Clemson’s Gaines Adams went fourth overall to Tampa Bay.

Bomb Threat, The Students Left Sidekicks In The School

Posted by Fookem and Bug on April 29, 2007

‘The students whom Reibe teaches use Sidekicks to communicate, and many of them left the Sidekicks in the school. Reibe had to summon interpreters for each student to make sure they were safe and contact the students’ parents so they could pick them up.’ …[more]

After reading the article in the newspaper. I wonder, How can the students leave Sidekicks in the school after all they have pouch for SK? or maybe their teachers force the students to leave because the teachers think it could be bomb device?

Is there something that I don’t know about school’s rule like not allowing to have it during the class period? or leave it in the locker until end of the day in school?

Care to explain?

KSDK, MO - Florida police are calling a 10-year-old boy a hero after his quick thinking helped save his sister’s life.

But there’s more to the story. The boy hero is also deaf.

Officers say J.J. Doolittle never panicked, and that made the difference for his little sister.

When J.J. found her hanging from her high chair by her shirt he immediately alerted his mother, who also happens to be deaf.

J.J. rushed to a neighbor’s house and called 911, then ran back home and waited for the police and EMTs to arrive.

When they did, none of them understood sign language, so J.J. wrote out a description of what had happened to his sister.

The rescuers were able to resuscitate the toddler, and after a brief hospital stay she’s back home and doing fine.

At an award ceremony in his honor J.J. thanked the first responders for their patience in their struggle to communicate with him.

They, in turn, said he deserves all of the credit.

Man gets five years in beating of deaf teen

Posted by Fookem and Bug on April 25, 2007

SIGNONSANDIEGO NEWS SERVICES

SAN DIEGO – A mildly retarded man who participated in the beating of a deaf teenager because he didn’t like the way the victim looked at him was sentenced Wednesday to five years in state prison.

Jesse Russell Ross, 21, pleaded guilty Oct. 24 to assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and battery with serious injury.

In December, Ross was evaluated by prison officials to determine if he was a suitable candidate for probation or should be sentenced to prison.

Defense attorney Milly Durovic unsuccessfully urged Judge George “Woody” Clarke to place Ross on probation and sentence him to a year in local custody.

“This young man is retarded,” Durovic said. “I think there’s some confusion in this man’s mind. He didn’t know this victim was deaf.”

The attorney said the defendant’s psychiatric and psychological problems had never been addressed fully and to send him to prison would basically “throw him away.”

Ross’ mother died when he was 12 and his father belittled him, Durovic told the judge.

“His whole life has been riddled with failure and humiliation,” the attorney said.

A “tremendously difficult” life was made more so when Ross dropped out of special education classes, his attorney said.

The attorney said Ross was in a group of people who beat Loro Bureng as he played basketball with friends at Rosa Parks Elementary School in City Heights last Aug. 13.

But Deputy District Attorney Danielle Hickman said Ross was prone to anger outbursts and confronted Bureng for no apparent reason and beat him, breaking his eye socket and nose.

The victim’s family, refugees from Sudan, is still afraid and doesn’t understand why their son was attacked in the first place, Hickman said.

The judge acknowledged that Ross suffers from at least mild retardation, but said the attack on the victim was “simply not justifiable.”

Clarke noted Ross was on probation for shoplifting at the time of the attack.

Full court to reconsider UPS lawsuit

Posted by Fookem and Bug on April 25, 2007

A 15-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will take up the case after a three-judge panel last year upheld a ruling that the Atlanta-based company’s practices violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. The smaller panel said the company had no right to automatically disqualify deaf or hearing-impaired drivers. On appeal, UPS maintained its hiring practice was a safety issue and that it was not discriminating. UPS wants to prohibit deaf employees from driving delivery trucks weighing less than 10,000 pounds.

Federal rules mandate that drivers of trucks exceeding 10,000 pounds be able to hear a whisper from 5 feet away. The government leaves it up to companies to decide who is qualified to operate lighter vehicles.

The U.S. Postal Service and FedEx Corp. allow some deaf drivers to operate delivery vehicles under 10,000 pounds.

In 2003, under a $10 million settlement, UPS agreed to track promotions and ensure that hearing-impaired employees and job applicants have access to certified interpreters. The company also agreed to provide text telephones and vibrating pagers to alert poor-hearing employees to emergency evacuations.

That settlement resolved all issues in the case except the truck driving dispute.

The case is Bates v. UPS Inc., 04-17295.

FOUR MEN ON A TRAIN

Posted by Fookem and Bug on April 25, 2007

Four men (a Russian, a Cuban, and a Deaf American, and an interpreter) are on a train. The Russian throws a half empty bottle of vodka out the window.

When the Deaf American and the Cuban react with surprise, he explains that “That vodka tasted bitter. Back home in Russia, we have much better vodka!”

So then the Cuban throws a half smoked cigar out the window saying, “That cigar tasted awful. Not like the ones we have in Cuba.”

Then the Deaf American stands up, grabs the interpreter, and throws him out the window, signing “He used signed English.”
